Everyone freaks out thinking bears are bullet proof. They are not. I'd personally take the 357 mag over the 45.
Last Spring I went bear hunting with a 30-30. You don't need a 338 Lapua like everyone says.
I roll my own: 180 gr XTPs going about 1300 fps; and yes there are moose and grizzly bears here. I'm sure there are some internet ballistic experts that will tell me I should be carrying something else.
They also make a 200 gr XTP, and there are some 220gr hard cast bullets if one would want...
I take my pre-64 Winchester 30-30 hunting along with my limited edition 2015 Ruger 35 Whelen. When I am on my death bed I wont be saying, "I wish I kept those guns in the safe."
I've never thought too much about it, but I will run a couple boxes through the gun before I will carry it. Both of my Glock 20s needed a couple hundred rounds through them to run at 100%. But I also shoot reloads so that could be on me.
I have shipped ammo through Fed Ex and UPS. Sadly a lot of the time it depends on you end up with behind the counter when shipping things. I had a phone conversation with someone pretty high up with Fed Ex, and they said they would deliver/ship ammo if it was picked up at my house in a prepaid...
I like it how people compare 9mm +p to a snub nose 357 mag. A 357 magnum excels out of a 6 inch barrel. I would not take a 6 inch 9mm as a backup for bear hunting.
