I have a 1885 low wall chambered in 25-20 single shot. I believe the tang sight that is on it is a Lyman #1. It is not threaded for eye cups and has a fairly large hole. I don't feel like I'm getting the consistency I would like with the sight alignment (although I'm shooting pretty good...
No, but thanks. I may end up trying some heavier bullets, but I'm wanting something about 85 gr to start with since I know it shoots them well in the factory loads.
.25-20 Single Shot cartridge NOT .25-20 WCF. I'll load smokeless (always) starting with IMR 4227. I know about the lube. I really don't want to shoot jacketed bullets. All indications are that it shoots well with a lead .257 dia 86 gr bullet at around 1200 fps. Pretty sure the rifle has...
The rifle is a 1885 Winchester, but it is chambered for .25-20 Single Shot. It is NOT .25-20 WCF. I have shot it with some original .25-20 Single Shot cartridges and It shot well. Nickel sized group at 25 yards. I pulled the bullet on a couple of cartridges and weighed them at 86 gr. They...
Recently traded for a 1885 Winchester Low Wall in .25-20 single shot. I have aquired plenty of brass, but I'm having trouble finding any bullets, or the right mold. Anybody know where to find .257 dia 85-87 gr bullets or a mold?
Thanks for the replies. The Benelli doesn't appeal to me. I just don't care for the less traditional look. Length, weight, sling swivels on the Mossberg are all a plus. I may try and find one I can put my hands on and see in person. My preference is still for the Ithaca if I could find a...
I'm looking for a lightweight 20 ga shotgun for squirrel hunting with dogs. I usually carry a .22, but at times a young dog needs the squirrels knocked out to it, and I need to carry a shotgun. Especially late season when the squirrels seem to timber out more often. What would be good choices...
Thanks for all the replies and input!
Here's what I've decided on:
Ruger receiver
Tac-Sol fluted x-ring barrel (threaded w/muzzle brake)
Trigger Job for a nice 4lb trigger
1" charging lever
Extended Mag Release
Hogue OM (black)
picatinny rail
Leupold 2-7 x 28mm VX-1
Leupold rings...
Budget: Like to stay under $600 without optics
Trigger: Slick, crisp, but not under 4 lbs. I may hand this rifle off to a youngster to shoot out a squirrel or coon from time to time.
This build is about having fun with squirrel and coon dogs and lightweight. I don't need an absolute...
Yep. I agree with the downside to lightweight, but 98% of the time I am carrying. I can find a good rest most times and just want to knock them out to the dogs. Carry = 99% for me. I want light weight most and by far.
Guys, I appreciate the replies. I know what is needed to hunt squirrels. Have several .22's that will do the task. I just have a hankering to build a light weight, short custom 10/22. My hunting is mostly about the dogs and sometimes carrying ANY rifle is my least favorite part of it. If I...
