S&W 329 PD for bear protection

Just returned from Montana elk hunting (what a beautiful country) but had a small run-in with a Griz. Nothing too dangerous as he was out 150 yds, smelled me and walked away. However, it did cause me to consider buying a 44 mag to carry on my next trip. I know these threads can get way off...

    Best 50BMG ammo for hunting

Well, that was the most unhelpful thread ever. Thanks much. Now that you've all had a bit of fun with this, the fact is that I bought it as a range gun and have been hunting and shooting for 40+ years. I understand ballistics, backstop requirements and the dangers of all weapons, including the...

    Best 50BMG ammo for hunting

Wow, you guys are rough! I normally hunt with my 30-30 or 7mm-08 so I'm not so sure I qualify as deranged. However, I did buy a Barrett M99 and am hoping to have some fun during deer season from long distances -- certainly not purchased as a "deer rifle." Ok, I'm a hick!

    Best 50BMG ammo for hunting

I will ultimately be reloading my own and probably using Barnes TSX 647gr but, in the mean time, can anyone assist with factory ammo recommendations that might be good for deer? I want penetration of course and some expansion but most of the ammo I'm seeing is FMJ that probably won't expand...

Barrett vs Armalite for 50 BMG

Thanks again everyone. I don't intend to shoot competitively off the bench. I want a 50 for three reasons: (a) I love guns and own almost every caliber (any excuse to get a new gun will work for me); (b) I think it would be a blast (so to speak) to pick off woodchucks and possibly whitetails...

Barrett vs Armalite for 50 BMG

Thanks all, I'll check out the state arms' versions and the FCSA. As for reloading, I've been reloading a dozen other calibers for years so I'm sure I'll be fine with it.

Barrett vs Armalite for 50 BMG

Thanks. I've handled the Armalite and agree with the fit/finish. Cost is not the determining factor but simply one of the factors. I've heard the Armalite has better accuracy than the Barrett but, to be honest, I won't be shooting past 1000 yds with it. Just looking for a cannon as I have most...

Barrett vs Armalite for 50 BMG

I apologize in advance if there's already a thread on this, please direct me to it if you like. I'm in the market for a 50bmg, happy to have a single shot so the Barrett M99 or Armalite AR-50a1 seem to be the most popular choices. I understand that the Armalite is a LOT heavier than the Barrett...

    Lever gun in 35 whelen

Just bought a BLR stainless TD in 358. Shoots great and I can't wait to use it on deer/elk this fall. I think I'm going to be one of those who becomes religious with this gun.

Anybody here with a BLR in .358 Win

I know this is an old post but I wanted to add my BLR 358 comments. Just bought a stainless take-down and it is incredible. Highly accurate and I can't wait to use it on deer and elk. Loading with 200gr Hornady RN for the woods and SP for the field. The only downside is that the rear sight is...

Thanks everyone. That's what I suspected.

    Lever gun in 35 whelen

Does anyone know whether these exist today new or whether any trusted manufacturer has made them in the past? I really like the caliber but would prefer it in a lever gun like a Marlin or Winchester. Thanks.

Chiappa Firearms (any history or reviews?)

Thanks all. I decided to just get another Marlin (1895XLR in 45-70). The barrel is a little shorter than my cowboy version and it's just a little more maneuverable in the woods. Accurate as heck too. Thanks for the info.

    Recommendations? 50 cal flintlock

Thanks all. Lots of information! I'm in no rush so I think I will take Arcticap's advice and attend the Dixon fair in July. In the mean time, I'll check out the links everyone has posted. Thanks again for all of your help.

    Zeiss Rapid Z Ballistic reticles

We probably got off track a little here! Again, I have no beef with the glass. As I said, my 3.5-10 w/ #4 reticle mounted on my Browning X-bold 7mm-08 is probably the best deer gun I've ever had. Love their glass, construction and reticles. I was just a little misled by the lack of information...
