Appleseed Mini-Shoot in Birmingham, Al. Jan 6, 2007

It was worth the drive! Yes it was a major wake-up call! Really wish I hadn't waited so long to attend an Appleseed. I had a great time and learned so much I feel like I owe somebody more money! My scores, which were disappointing at first to say the least, improved to an extent I wouldn't...

Has anyone had experience with Boyd stocks?

Got a Boyd's JRS Classic VIP stock last year for my old Mauser, it needed a little inletting just like they said, I'm very pleased with the quality. Gave them a call for some advice on the inletting, and they were extremely knowledgeable, helpful and courteous. Good people!

    Clay shooting in/around Destin, FL.

Also, approx. one hour west of Destin is the Santa Rosa Sporting Clays & Gun Club, their # is 850-995-9377. Don't know anything about their rates, I've seen the facility but never done any shooting there... Just another option for ya.

    Col. Cooper & "Substitute Scouts"

Brule, you're correct in that the scout concept was based on a 300-meter max range. Though that's pretty short-range for a .30 caliber bullet launcher, it's a trade-off for rapid target acquisition. TANSTAAFL, that's for sure. The platform is definitely good for longer shots, I mean there...

    Col. Cooper & "Substitute Scouts"

Lee, how do you like your Steyr? I've got an old Steyr 12/61 myself that I thought about doing the same thing to. Just never got around to it...

    Col. Cooper & "Substitute Scouts"

Thanks for the replies, gentlemen. I've come to the conclusion that when the Guru spoke of "substitute scouts," he didn't mean non-Steyr rifles, but rather those which did NOT meet all the criteria but were nevertheless being called "scouts," thus cheapening the term somewhat. (The "flippant...

    Col. Cooper & "Substitute Scouts"

Cosmoline, I'm not losing any sleep over Col. Cooper's opinion, I was just seeking insight. I have to give the man credit for establishing the criteria for an idea that is, to me at least, intriguing. I think the concept is sound and if the criteria is met, I do believe we have a bonafide...

    Col. Cooper & "Substitute Scouts"

444, I agree with you completely, and especially about the misuse of terminology. It's a pet peeve of mine as well. But I thought (perhaps mistakenly) that the Savage Scout could truly be called such because it did in fact meet the criteria. Here are the specs: Weight-sighted and slung: 3...

    Col. Cooper & "Substitute Scouts"

I knew somebody would bring up the royalties myth. Quote from Cooper's Commentaries, Volume 13 , No. 10: It may be suggested that I push the Steyr Scout rifle pretty hard, but I do not do so for cash or any other sort of economic reward. I push the Scout because to me it represents...

    Col. Cooper & "Substitute Scouts"

As someone very interested in the Scout rifle concept, not to mention the satisfied owner of a Savage Scout, I usually keep track of the Scout commentary here on THR. There's a current thread here on the "American Scout" that I've been following with interest, for example... Anyhow, as...

    rem 870 VS win 1200

You didn't get hurt on that deal! I've got a 1200 in 12 ga. and have no intentions of ever parting with it; feels good, shoulders quick, never had a problem with it, $90 well spent. (This was a few years ago.) My 870's I like even more, and it's basically because of that steel receiver...

    Hog hunt results

Until recently, I never would have believed that people hunt hogs w/knives either, but sure enough people do it all the time with hog dogs. Didn't get to see it, but heard about a fella taking a hog with a Buck Special (and the help of some mountain curs) during my visit to the TN mountains...

    Benelli Nova owners: problems?

Joined the "dark side" last year and bought a used Nova at my favorite gun emporium, couldn't refuse for $200 out the door. Mainly bought it out of curiosity, to see how it compared to an 870. No problems to report, trigger pull is a little heavy but not enough to be an issue--my worst...

    870 Reputation

In defense of the Express 870's... ...mine has never given me a minute's trouble. It doesn't even have the mysterious rusting problem I hear so much about! Seems about as tough as my Wingmaster, although definitely not as purty. (Purty is as purty does, though.) Then again I'm an oddball...

    Hog hunt results

Howdy y'all, I checked in a while back asking for advice about what gun to use for a hog hunt. I ended up taking my Guide Gun in .45/70, and used some warm 405gr. hardcast handloads. Here's what happened: Took 40-yd. shot at 200# boar in heavy brush, hit left leg (a bit too low, I was...
