Walther pk380. "full size" single stack 380 for a woman with small hands. Recoil is barely above a 22, slide is easier to rack than any other gun made. Cheap to buy, warranty by s&w.

380 is marginal as is 9x18. I'm willing to compromise and carry guns in those calibers for the pocket size (380) or for the dead nuts reliability and who cares if it gets banged up factor (9x18). A makarov or cz82 would make a decent cheap trail gun... Although personally, if in the woods, I...

Your wife will end up hating guns and shooting if you buy her a snub to start with. Bad, bad choice. The Ruger sp101 is likely the best choice for her. Smaller, but still very comfortable to shoot with 38spl.

I have a RIA tactical, and it's been a great gun. Zero malfunctions, ever. RIA definitely puts out a good product for the price.

EMP is everything a "true" officers 1911 wishes it was. 9mm is the right cartridge for an aluminum officers frame, and the little changes made to the emp make it the most reliable officers frame 1911 out there. To anyone who disagrees - have you fired one?

With the right belt, holster, and clothing selection you can conceal anything. For true throw it on and don't have to even think about it, and belt carry, my P64 is the easiest. But with a little effort and selection, I can conceal my FNP of i want.

Overall, I think I love my EMP the most. Everything about it is just right.

For budget, can't beat RIA. Very good quality control, and great warranty if you do have an issue. I have a RIA tactical of unknown vintage (horse traded for it) that has never malfunctioned, despite my mistreatment of it.
