    Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

Thanks for the kind words, it was a pleasure talking and shooting with you today. We had an exceptional squad which makes a day of shooting all the more pleasant. I hope that we meet on a range again soon. I really dislike shooting off the front of that helicopter. You have a much better...

So...AR's are NOT 'direct impingement' operating systems

FYI, Mark Westrom sold Armalite to S.A.C. in 2013.

    52, 53, 55, 69 grain, FMJ, HP, BT etc .223, what's your most accurate powder/bullet combination??

AR15; Service Rifle and Match Rifle. SR has the standard 20" barrel. Using a 1-7 Bartlein this year with excellent results. MR were always 26" 1-8, mostly Harts. I chambered all of them with AMU or Wylde style reamers. These have throats that are .030 - .040" longer than standard. The 80s are...

    Nice bolt .22LR

Odd Job has stumbled upon a very interesting rifle. Stellite locking lugs, double set triggers made by three different companies (in name) and imported into the USA. http://www.standardfirearms.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=167 Lots of pictures and great write up here...

    Powder for .308

Varget is the go to for .308. N140 is another popular powder used for Palma loads. The AMU uses Varget and Berger 185s for their M110 load.

Question for the long range precision guys

All ammo (factory, boutique loaded and handloaded) will have some variance in the dimensions of the loaded rounds. Those dimensions will vary between lots as well as manufacturers, even handloaded. Even if the set up of the dies are the same, dies have variance just like headspace gauges and we...

Question for the long range precision guys

Sunray, there are many ways to cut a chamber with different reasons for each from hunting to benchrest and in-between. None to almost no resistance has worked for me for different applications when measuring headspace while chambering. When the barrel is torqued down to the receiver there will...

Question for the long range precision guys

Clearance numbers run all over the place and you are right in there. I would not go any farther than .008" bolt gap though. I've seen as much as .015" and I don't like that much unsupported brass. Badger actions are weird but the PRS guys seem to like them. I get the insert for the lugs and...

Question for the long range precision guys

Taliv is absolutely correct about headspace. The chamber should be cut so that the bolt closes on the go gauge with none to almost no resistance when chambering. This will allow for thread crush to open the headspace up to an allowable dimension when the barrel is torqued down. Actions based on...

Help explain: Rapid Fire and Slow Fire

You ain't wrong. I'm not playing the cheese grater forearm game. I took an old match rifle flattop upper, put a new SR barrel on it with an old CLE SR forearm to make my new optics SR. The CMP has done the shooters a huge disservice by publishing three rules changes this year. The NRA is just...

Help explain: Rapid Fire and Slow Fire

This is not correct. Both the NRA and CMP allow scopes on Match Rifles without limits on magnification power. This is covered in the latest CMP rules dated 03/02/17 and the NRA rule changes for 2017.

Sub $500 Spotting scope recommendations ?

Set the hook on that line. Kowa scopes are the de facto standard scopes used in highpower competition. There are better scopes out there but they are expensive. I have a 15 year old 611 and it's still a good scope today.
