    Pins work better. I've tried without pins and the cases don't come out as clean. I use this to separate pins from cases and it works great, even for .223. RCBS media separator

    Your #8 shot is running out of energy before getting to 60 yards. It's too small to get very much penetration at those distances. You need to use larger / heavier shot if you want it to be effective at 60 yards.
