PSA Gen 3 AK's are good to go. In my experience, most haters likely dropped $1200 on an Arsenal and are trying to justify spending almost 3x the price for their AK.

I've purchased a ton of trade in guns over the years. Mechanically they have all been excellent. If you are a person that obsesses over cosmetics, dont buy surplus guns.

I had one. About 600 flawless rounds through it before I traded it away. Tried to induce malfunctions by shooting it sideways, upside down, etc to no avail. For $300, its an amazing bargain for a 15rd .45acp. I only ever shot Winchester service grade ammo though, I didnt try any other loads.

I'd go with the lightest bullet you can find. 50gr HP's or varmint tips come to mind. They shoot great from all my 1/7's. Typical self defense range is within 30ft. No need to overthink it.

You can buy M1A's for around $1100 online. I just got a Socom 16 for $1200 from PSA.
