As long as you don't exceed the intended load/grains that the gun was built to shoot, you should be good. The old guns were made of much better metal than the ones we get today.

I would be finding a buddy to take there so I can shoot, although I don't seem to understand what the buddy or owning a handgun has to do with things.

no grease for me
grease will allow sand etc to attach to the gun and grind away over time.
Being in a sandy area. sand blows with the wind and sand and grit will act like lapping compound. I oil mine but no heavy grease.
