fellow cali man run down to your local wal mart or sporting good store and they should have a hunting booklet that gives you dates zones and prices for tags you do have to buy tags for deer and send them in to sacramento where they will issue them out its pretty much first come first served in...

when I was 19 on my first elk hunt I was actually hunting for mule deer opening morning but as fate would have it I came across a nice 5x5 elk that thrashed through 6 foot tall manzanita bushes that I had to crawl thru never the less I drop him with a 257 weatherby well placed...

Depends where in cali you live I live in central cali there are plenty of orchard and fields were ranchers are more than happy to let you dispose of some unwanted varmints if all else fails hed up to your nearest foothills and just find some fire roads and start picking...
