    Gunsmithing School Advice

Something I posted on another forum a while back... i ended up at Murray State in OK after wasting a bunch of time (his and mine. his being worth a whole lot more) at the local 'smithshop in wichita falls. he and BB both recommended MSC, so off i went. i lucked up (read badgered them til...

    Gunsmithing School

I think it's worth the money. An apprenticeship can last longer and, depending on where you apprentice, what you learn can be limited. School may teach you more, in a pretty structured environment. The schools are also a known quantity, and may help when getting a job after you get done. The...

    cylinder gap

For a dbl action, I usually like them in the .005-007" range. This gives the cylinder a little wiggle room during rotation, and when a little end-shake comes into play. Like Patriot says, after a little shooting, a too tight bbl gap will drag, and could lock the gun up. Ideally, the gap should...

Can a Ruger SA .32 H&R Magnum also shoot .327 Federal Magnum?

The factory cylinder is a little too short for the 327FM. A long-bodied cylinder is needed, as the 327FM is .125" longer than the H&R version. I really like the 327FM. Planning on building a 327 Single Six at some point.

Taurus Raging Bull: Crap or Not?

It's funny. People hear a person say something they believe in or agree with, it's cold hard fact, and they are spreading the Gospel. People hear a person say something they disagree with, and it's anecdotal or a specious argument, and just full of horse hockey. This is not, strictly...

Remington 770 Real World Review and Mild Modifications

The trigger guard was my only gripe with the plastic stock, and it was due to the fact that if it gets busted, new stock time. Bolt handle issue had me scratching my head as well. The break looked like a poor heat treat break, but if so they REALLY screwed the pooch on it. If just running the...

Remington 770 Real World Review and Mild Modifications

My biggest gripe with the Rem770 is still the plastic stock. I saw several, not a ton but enough to make me question it, come back with the molded in plastic trigger guard busted right off. None had a large gouge or ding where it looked like it had been abused. One was busted off from the...

    Remington BDL to Sniper

While I would, and am, thinking of doing a 33RUM just because I want/need to build one of the new ultra-dumb@ss magnums, I'd look at doing the 280. Much more pleasant to shoot, and cheaper to reload. I'd go with a McMillan fiberglass stock, pillar/glass bed it, and paint it to your hearts...

    327 Ruger Blackhawk

I've pulled the switch on a sample of one. It was a pleasure to shoot. That big frame eats up the minimal recoil. However, that is an awful big gun to shoot that awful small cartridge, even if it is an 8-shot. Just MHO.

Taurus Raging Bull: Crap or Not?

No clue. It was a big box store, and we sold more than a couple. Sadly, that is why it is getting harder and harder to find general gunsmiths around, and why there are more and more 'gunschimdts' doing crappy work out of their kitchens. It is extremely difficult to make money as a general...

Compare 2 newer .327 Magnum Revolvers

Both are good guns. I like the 327FM as a small field cartridge, as opposed to a SD offering, but that's just me. At this point, I'd rather use a 357Mag due to the wealth of data on the various loads available, and the availability of good, proven SD rounds. Give the 327FM a few years and let's...

Taurus Raging Bull: Crap or Not?

Well, not anymore. I don't work retail 'smithing anymore, and when I did, I got tired of us sending back 2-3 Tauri a week. :D I've seen far more Tauri with problems out the box. I've seen WAY more come back busted within a month/first range trip. I, and my shop (custom shop, not retail), will...

Taurus Raging Bull: Crap or Not?

Having fixed a fair number of both, I can say with first-hand knowledge that the early Taurus guns were an almost exact copy of their S&W couterparts. Taurus changed some parts and redesigned a few things, but the Taurus M66 is an almost identical clone of the S&W Mod66 for example. Not exact by...

    Ruger Bisley Vaquero

*sigh* I didn't say the frame was the problem. I did say... This is the same as saying "I built a 500Alaskan on a Ruger No. 1" or "I built a shed on a concrete slab". Describing the platform on which something is built, not that something itself. Ruger has built their fixed sight guns...

    First bolt-action. Stevens 110E .30-06

Savage/Stevens sold a less expensive version of the Savage Mod110 (and Mod10)under the name 'Stevens Mod 200'. Non-Accutrigger, cheap plastic stock, fit and finish is a little rough. I have one in .223 that shoots just over 1/2 inch at 100yds with Hornady 55gr V-Max off bags if I do my part...
