IMO if you're getting the Hi Point for cheap fun, then it only makes sense to get the 9mm version. That will let you shoot cheaply as well.

If you're just looking for a fun/cheap plinking rifle in a pistol-caliber carbine, the Hi Point isn't a bad choice. I'd consider the 9mm version over the .40 S&W though -- 9mm ammo should be noticeably cheaper and easier to find. Also, if I recall correctly, the Hi Point was running about $179...
