I carried the M9 in Iraq with no problems. As others who have been there have stated, it would get dirty even while holstered, but I cleaned it meticulously and wiped it down (until dry) with Rem-Oil afterwards. That seemed to work very well and I never had concerns about reliability.

I will stand by my statement. There are other considerations in addition to tube length. Look at feed lip and follower design. The vaunted Wilson 47D is a good example.
I've been using a Model UNS from Kenneth Null for 4 years to carry an all-steel Colt Government. It's extremely comfortable (even when seated/driving) and conceals the big Colt exceptionally well.
