I ended up going tritium after walking around with a piece of the wifes jewelry and it was not as easy to see as I expected. That was with 24k, and most sights seem to be 14k. My findings align with yours.

Can you describe one of these many conditions so I can attempt to replicate it? I have spend a good bit of time trying to setup ideal conditions for night sights, but have failed this far.

I have never been able to create a scenario where I could both see the tritium glow and identify a target in which I couldn't also see non tritium sights. To me night sights are as effective on day 1 as day 1 million.

The half price for used is not even close, depending on the optic. With lifetime warranties now, a used optic can be very close in cost to new. Even if it is old and outdated, they likely wont have parts so you will get an updated replacement.
