A lot of this is log rolling. Ex-NRA insiders start up companies that the NRA then uses for mailings & other services - often these people are incompetent and the mailings go out after the election or they other wise screw stuff up.,

The NRA is corrupt. The dirty secret is that gun rights is a potent political issue and any number of different groups can activate gun rights voters. Sadly the NRA tended to hurt gun rights by NOT going after establishment politicians in primaries. Worse they often covered for them.

My first revolver was a GP-100 in 357. Even with a spring kit I could never really shoot it well. Some of that was inexperience but over the years I found I could shoot Smith N Frames, Ruger Speed Sixs, and other revolvers much better. Ended up trading off the GP-100.

29 rounds is a good minimum if you get into an active shooter situation. For most self defense a revolver might suffice.

E-bay is good to buy cheap china made stuff. The buyer protection is strong - most sellers will quickly respond with replacements/refunds if there is an issue.
