    Long range hunting

One long shot, one muddy face I have the .308 case in my desk drawer with @ this story on a 3x5 card stuck in it; I had a cow elk tag (Jan through March), gout and a cracked ankle. I drove all over this hunt unit in the Oregon Cascades for three months. The last day of the tag, I was at...

    Western Oregon Upland Game Observation

Very late Spring I live @ 1,300 ft and we had snow-flurries several times in late April. Our tomatoes are just now turning red. I was out again today, scouting for elk. Seen a couple quail; looking small too. Must be the late Spring.

    Western Oregon Upland Game Observation

I live and play up in the Western Oregon Coast Range, only been here since 2001 so whatever that is worth; Just a report, not a complaint. I noticed a late hatch with the grouse this year. It is already mid-September and this years hatch are only a little bigger than the quail. The Hens...

    Steel shot and choke question

Take your pick You would get a lot of different answers on this one; I'm not the "Duck Commander" so here is my style and preferences: I only shoot over decoys (20-40 yards), I never pass-shoot until the last day of the season. I river hunt out of a jon-boat. Clean-kills only as I have no...

    My little girl

My three daughters I'm "their dad" rather; they are all grown and on their own now but I can't help but to correlate between their personalities and how they aimed firearms at targets when we used to shoot. Lightheartedly as follows.......... The eldest always aimed for the head; she is a...

    How Much Ammo on Hand?

Frank, you make a good point; I do it for the same reason I stock up on anything, the thought of running out really bugs me. I don't believe we will get much warning before the hammer falls. The laws seem to sneak up on us and the next thing you know, certain types of ammo are banned. I'm not in...

How do you purify water in the field?

On foot I'm a believer in the military purification tablets for dismounted use; We drank water out of the Yellow River in Florida, the Chattahoochee in Georgia, the Rhine in Germany, The Lampasas in Texas, Well-water in Dugway, Utah and any number of small streams, creeks and ponds. I never...

How do you purify water in the field?

On foot or vehicle If I have my vehicle, I haul in the two 5 gallon bucket filter system. I got the filter-spigot kit online for 28 bucks. Choose clean white buckets with a number "2" stamped on the bottom. Works great, we use it all the time at home.

    Share your 45-70 pet load?

Anyone care to share their pet load for a 45-70? I have the dies ordered and 85 starline brass (fired once) all polished and ready to go. This is my Elk and bear rifle that I carry in the timber hellholes 0-75 yards, maybe 80 yards top range; open sights on a Marlin 1895G. Thanks in...

Is hunting on a ranch really hunting?

Defining ethics are we? Example of a deer taken on a ranch: I shot a deer a while ago while I was doing some fence work (on my ranch). Since I can call it what ever I like, I choose to call it a harvest, a legal clean kill. My ethics could be questioned, but who cares? Summary: I...

    First reloads, not to bad

little by little Could it be because the head was turned? Just kidding....:D I'm still green so for whatever its worth...... I'm going up and down with the components little by little; I was experiencing leading on the .45 Colt so I dropped the HS6 down a grain or two because I loaded...

    Questions from a new reloader

Good enough I just started spilling powder this year so what ever its worth... Your situation/procedure is similar to the one I chose; I took each step one at a time and I am learning. I started with .45LC; I posted a similar question on removing the primers and I got an understandable...

    7.62x39

Mini 30 point I reload what I have fairly economically but I often discern over the loading costs of new components; A box of 20, Boxer-primed X39 (Fiocci) costs about 10 bucks+s&h. New Winchester Brass ($20 for 50) in .308 dia, primers ($4 for 100), # 7 and bullets are only a couple...
