Been a while, but I'm back and looking for a new rifle

First range report with the MSR 10 was positive. Today was just a function test -- max range 25 yards. Ran 80 rounds of PPU M80 ammo through with nary a hiccup. I'm still looking around to find a range where I can get some distance (ideally 200 yards) but so far not issues with function. Also...

Been a while, but I'm back and looking for a new rifle

I ended up picking up a Savage MSR 10 Hunter in .308. I'm impressed with it so far, but the proof will be in the pudding. I've got a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x24mm on the way for this gun and should be able to get out on New Years to run some rounds through it.

Been a while, but I'm back and looking for a new rifle

After spending a year in Knoxville, TN and not having had time to do anything gun-related, my wife and I finally made NC (near Charlotte) our permanent home. Feral hogs are apparently a big pest around here, so I'm looking at my options. Initially I wanted a .308 Win semi-auto for plenty of...

How loud is suppressed subsonic 300 blackout?

Trying to gauge loudness on video is a difficult thing to do. Electronics have a way of compressing the audio and making quieter sounds louder while attenuating the louder sounds. I'm sure there are some videos out there that use a decibel meter to give a more accurate representation of the...

    Unbelievably stupid

I stopped going to public ranges after a similar issue happened. My friends and I were there shooting, and the firing line was packed. These younger guys (we'll call them The Idiots) needed to set up a target, so rather than call for a cease fire they start giggling and ran out into the range...

    Feral cats

To be fair, animals are also considered personal property, so even if its not illegal to shoot a feral animal, if it is owned by someone you may be held liable for destruction of property.

    Feral cats

I think that's why legalese is so difficult to interpret -- gotta keep the lawyers and politicians in a job somehow. I hardly think that an animal is automatically considered "wild" if they are not somehow confined. By that logic, any dog seen running down the road would be fair game. While...

    Feral cats

Like I said, I'm not making any judgement calls. I'm not saying its right or wrong, just mentioning that there may be legal implications for announcing in a public forum that you may be involved in illegal activities may not be the smartest thing in the world. I think the issue is that the laws...

    Feral cats

From the Oklahoma Animal Cruelty Statues: Just to make it clear -- I'm not making any judgement calls here, just trying to clarify. The above is from the OK Animal Cruelty Statues. The only possible issue is the "any animal in subjugation or captivity" bit, however I doubt that means an animal...

    Feral cats

I feel like, as a veterinarian, I should mention that -- whether you agree with it or not -- killing feral cats is considered animal cruelty (as they are viewed as companion animals, not wild animals, and as such they do not have an open hunting season). You would probably do well to avoid...

Article About How "Hunters" Are Against Lead Bullets

Tell me, specifically, what you mean. What description of the problem, how is it flawed, and how is it not backed up by evidence? How specific do you want said evidence? Would you like to see necropsy reports with tissue lead levels and stomach content analysis? What evidence do YOU want...

Article About How "Hunters" Are Against Lead Bullets

I see plenty of people here denying there is a problem at all, or at least a problem that is big enough to work towards a solution for. Its easy to say someone should come up with a solution, but it would be even easier if everyone was on-board with coming up with a solution that works for everyone.

Article About How "Hunters" Are Against Lead Bullets

I'm not arguing for a solution. Talking about possible solutions is putting the cart before the horse when many can't (or refuse to) see that the problem exists in the first place. I'm not a hunter, so anything I say regarding ammunition bans or lead-free ammunition wouldn't be taken seriously...

Article About How "Hunters" Are Against Lead Bullets

Actually, I have addressed that issue in my LD50 discussion, where the LD50 of lead for birds has not been established, presumptively because there's no money to be made (i.e. the data from the research is not deemed valuable enough for the investment/funding). You cant disregard a line of...

Article About How "Hunters" Are Against Lead Bullets

If we look at the literature for humans, there is a growing body of evidence that any level of lead in the body is detrimental. According to a paper from the American Academy of Pediatrics (Prevention of Childhood Lead Toxicity, AAP 2016), blood levels as low as 5 ppb (yes, that's parts per...
