Identity and Date of Manufacture of S&W Revolvers

J-Bar your Model 686 Distinguished Combat Magnum was manufactured in 1984. Guns in the AEVxxxx to AFJxxxx range shipped in November of that year. UNless there is an M stamped near the serial number, it is subject to a recall. With some magnum ammo there is the chance that the primer will flow...

PaFrank: I didn't think you wrote to the Congress critters in the manner in which you posted, I used it as a hypothetical example. Unlike you I don't trust, but I do hope. When I was active in the OZ gun lobby I noticed a tendency for some to add extraneous comments or take a position of...

Good idea. Positive reinforcement is needed. Any other members who feel like writing, regardless of personal viewpoint, don't use descriptions like in your communications. He's a leader in their party while we are 'no bodies from no where' especially if we are not in their electorates. Using...

Labug: Your .38 Military & Police Postwar was manufactured in 1948. OkieBeard: your Model 10-6 .38 Military & Police Heavy Barrel was manufactured in 1969 or 1970. Serial range for those years was D90001 to D330000, so 1970 seems more likely. Slicksleave: Your Model 66 .357 Combat Magnum was...

    Centerfire Systems S&W Model 10 38 Special

That 1948 gun may have been ond of the last with the 'long action', IIRC they switched to the 'short action' that year. The long action guns I've tried had much nicer DA triggers than modern S&Ws.

    Vintage S&Ws

S&W forum is an experts site, narrowly tailored to the discussion of one area of the firearms culture. THR is a generalist site, providing a broad net to sweep in people new to shooting and the RKBA, which the education in and support of is the main purpose of THR. Each provides a different...

    Vintage S&Ws

Vintage: A collection of contemporaneous and similar persons or things a period of origin or manufacture. I think Mr Pierce has used the correct terminology. Firearms from the start of metallic cartridges through to the introduction of smokeless gun powder, all modified in interesting ways to...

Post 66 latch then, serial range ran to roughly 758000 in 1969, or roughly 400,000 gund between '63 & '69. Assuming roughly 70,000 guns a year, 1966 or early 1967 seems likely.

Away from home ATM, so no reference book. will check tonight. Thats a mid 60s gun, I don't have a year to year breakdown of serial numbers for that period. What will narrow it down are the following: Does it have a flat or concave cylinder release. If the grips are original, Is there an...

Automaccc: My tablet can't open that document. Please post the info in a standard post. Netsew: The N5xxxxx serial range was used from 1978 to 1980. If I had to guestimate a year based on average production levels 1980 seems likely. JTHunter: Model of 1905, or third model based on that frame...
