    Scheels Sporting Goods

I always love threads like this when guys get a new store, then bitch and moan about prices when prices are high on the same product everywhere. You think a new store suddenly has access to things like primers that are virtually unavailable anywhere, and if so they are supposed to be at 1990’s...

Ruger Mini Thirty. On the fence.

At one time I had two safes full of rifles. I was paying about $1,000 a year for extra insurance to cover them. After a while I figured out that insuring, keeping them stored and oiled for guns I’d never fired and probably never would fire didn’t make sense. They went away. I no longer own...

Rifle optics: a blue collar spending perspective for cost / benefit

Same thing happened to us. Fortunately the bank caught it immediately. Now we NEVER, EVER use a debit card. It gives whoever has the card number direct access to your checking account. Like you we use a 2% cash back card that gets paid off twice a month.

Rifle optics: a blue collar spending perspective for cost / benefit

I’ve told my story about bear hunting in Canada, but I’ll relay it again because it’s so incredibly interesting. OK, at least I think it is. Hunting black bear. Bears typically come into bait at very late evening or just as the sun is coming up. I was in a tree stand on a very, very dark and...

Rifle optics: a blue collar spending perspective for cost / benefit

I have no idea if this is the correct scope, but I just took this screen shot. Product appears to have excellent ratings. Amazon is seller, not third party.

Rifle optics: a blue collar spending perspective for cost / benefit

I felt that way at one time. Then I had my “it’s good enough“ scope fog up when I had my one opportunity at the deer of a lifetime. Later another guy shot that deer, 14 point symmetrical typical, 28” outside spread. At the time I believe it would have been the state record and would score...

Rifle optics: a blue collar spending perspective for cost / benefit

At one time some of the Tasco scopes were quite good. IIRC those were made in Japan. Later they tried to live off the name and most or all their scopes were made in China which were significantly inferior Today one can get nice scopes far cheaper relatively than products 40 years ago In...

Rifle optics: a blue collar spending perspective for cost / benefit

These threads come up quite often, and I really wonder if the OP can’t afford a better scope, or if they simply can’t justify the cost in their mind. You can justify $80 for a carton of cigarettes or a tank of gas, both which are gone in a week, but you can’t justify the cost of one of each...

    calling 22 hornet guys

At one time I did the great Hornet hunt for a suitable rifle. I figured out that accuracy is hit or miss (pun intended) with Ruger products. I had already purchased one before I found this out. Evidently they at least sometimes oversized the chambers, the result being the cartridge points...

    Build a AR?

I’ve assembled uppers and lowers. If you can change out a bathroom faucet or the oil in your car you assemble an AR. As noted there are a few specialty tools that make assembling particularly the upper easier There are a bazillion YouTube videos

    Trying out leupolds firedot reticle

I had a VX-R with Firedot and currently have a VX-6 with Firedot on my 7 mag Browning. As noted, there is a push button under the side turret cap that turns it on, each push then progresses through a series of ten brightness levels, then shuts off. It goes anywhere from barely visible to a...

My Newest Rifle, CZ 457 Varmint 22lr

When I got my 453 I was all excited to wring it out. I got some expensive and some very expensive ammo and wasted it trying to get great groups out of the gate. Found out later that it needs at least a good break in or you’re wasting time and money After first cleaning the barrel, I’d...

This should get your blood boiling...

I’ve passed literally hundreds of deer that I could have legally killed waiting for a big buck. I've passed on smaller turkey to get a big gobbler. we eat everything we harvest. I have a freezer with plenty of beef and pork. There used to be guys that were allowed to deer hunt the same farm...

New type shotgun ammo for turkeys

I’ve used Hevi-Shot for years. I believe it is tungsten but not sure. My longest kill is 69 yards lasered. DRT Talking to him I was under the impression this is something relatively new. Dunno. Maybe just new to their company. He just commented that it makes even a 28 gauge a viable option

New type shotgun ammo for turkeys

Just talked to my neighbor friend that does shotgun ammo development for a small specialty manufacturer. They have shot that is almost 2x as dense as Hevi-Shot. They are using #9’s and getting through penetration on turkey heads at 60 yards. A 28 gauge is now plenty adequate due to pellet...
