5R rifling : 5 lands and grooves with Radiused rifling. It is supposed to give higher velocities and fould less as the bullet jacket is not pressed into 90 degree angles at the bases of the groves and top of the lands. It gives higher velocity due to a better gas seal for the same reason.

Some adaptation of a bushmaster cannon gets my vote. Arm a few dozen but hide them and make it known, then use the threat to protect the rest. Similar to CCW. Not that the rest shouldn't be armed with small arms etc, but the possibility of a big cannon popping up should scare the peg legs off em.

I think you should build a long action caliber with cartridge that has about the same case head diameter as the 8mm mauser. If you don't, you will need to change the bolt head, ie cut away metal. This would be the case for the .300 WM, 7mm Rem Mag, and many of the other calibers mentioned...
