    Cap and ball.....What's your story?

I got my info at the public library Back in the late 60s, I was talking with the owner of a gun store. Back then you could talk to them and they knew what they were talking about. He showed me a Spiller and Burr kit. I brought it for about $18.00 with a bunch of stuff to use it with and took...

    THR Spiller & Burr Club

I'm in! I got this Spiller and Burr as a kit back in the early 70's. I was very young and could not keep my hands off of it. As a result, all markings are gone and the front sight has been changed. I used to take it camping and hunting. Several friends were hooked on Black Powder by...

    Mechanical Choke Devices

My first Shotgun was a Rem. 870 with a Poly Choke. Where the shot went depended on the choke setting. Mostly, it shot to the left.

What's the worst shotgun you've ever owned...

My first Shotgun was an 870. It had one of those variable chokes attached and would not shoot straight. When you got to know where the shot was going you couldn't change the choke or the shot would go somewhere else.

How Much Do You Shoot In A Year?

About once every other month. When I do go out, I usually shoot about a hundred rounds of various calibers. That's black powder. I do like to shoot my more modern guns and take my Krag out once or about four times a year. I also shoot trap about six times a year.

Anyone been to a Gun Show in Las Vegas?

I am thinking of going to the Gun Show in Las Vegas. I went to the one here in San Diego and it was not what I expected. There was only one vender selling primers (no powder) and he had no Magnum Rifle primers. Other venders had other stuff but in limited supply. I also am considering going...

What Was Your Fathers Favorite Firearm ?

My father only had two guns: a luger he brought back for WW2 and a Mauser. He never hunted. They were just around. He used to take the Luger out and clean it once and awhile. He kept it in his room for home defense. I read his war record once and he was an expert marksman but was issued a...

    Shooting BP in San Diego

I've shot black powder at the South Bay Rod and Gun Club but mostly I shoot modern rifles there. At the P2K range, I shoot trap. For my black power fix these days, I just go the Imperial Valley and shoot in the desert. The best place I've found in Imperial Valley is off hi-way 98. Just drive...

I need help from you older shooters

I need advice from you older shooters who wear bi or tri focal. I wear try focal (no lines) and in the past, when I was younger and did not wear try focal, I used to shoot pretty good without a scope. The last few years, I have been using my Mauser with scope. Today, I took out the old Krag...

    Spiller and Burr Mystery

The pistol being so reliable might be due to your skill with Black Powder weapons. My first black powder gun was a Spiller & Burr kit I brought back around 1971 for $18.00. I was a machinist apprentice at the time so I felt confident I could assemble and finish the gun. It worked flawless...

Preventing chain fires, without alot of grease

Chain Fires I have been using lube pills behind the ball for all my B.P. pistols, even my Kentucky 45. Before the lube pills, I used Crisco. Back when I was young I had a couple of chain fires on my Spiller & Burr. I switched to #10 caps and never had another one.

    complete disassembly

Clean it I must have more free time than most of you. I have always cleaned my guns completely (stripped down completely) after shooting them. That goes for my black powder guns and my modern ones, like my Krag and Winchester 94. With my black powder guns, I use Olive Oil. With my other...

    Thoughts on this?

I do. When you get a new gun from the dealer, it has been my experience that they use a good "gun oil" on it. I do not used gun oil on my black powder weapons, I use olive oil. This is my preference and this is why I break them down and clean them; then oil them up with virgin olive oil...

    BP in school?

Public Speaking Class Back in the 70's I was attending a junior college in California. One of the guys gave a demonstration of his STAR Progressive Reloader. The instructor was a retired marine and no one objected. The school was somewhat liberal and I always wondered if anyone outside of...
