Patched round balls are all I deer hunt with and and they're extremely accurate. But they're out of Flintlocks with proper 'round ball twists' for the caliber, and I haven't personally tried them out of a fast twist inline.
While the ROT in an inline is probably faster than it needs to be...
In addition to the good items mentioned above, I don't like to litter when I hunt, so I carry a few of what I call 'Field Cleaning Kits'.
I thogoughly clean the ML and Flint lock assembly after a shot before reloading, and stuff all the mess back in the Ziploc bag to pack out.
4 wet cleaning...
IMO, if you're shooting 'driven' pheasants, the 6's will probably be good for the head & neck coming at you;
But if you're shooting 'flushing' pheasants going away from you, personally I'd want something a little heavier like #5's;
Whichever...hope you have a good hunt and don't pull a "Dick...
Just recently started getting back into squirrels for the extra hunting opportunities and to try out a new .40cal Flintlock.
The problem where I hunt in NC is that squirrel opens just a week or so before deer, and then for several weeks, deer trump squirrels.
Then by the time I'm ready to get...
Flintlock rifles & smoothbores are all I've hunted with for a dozen years or so now regardless of the season...I'm 'hooked' on them...if I hunt, its with a Flintlock...LOL.
I live for the rut...and here the main cycle of all the rut activity is basically the month of November, give or take a...
Went in my main deer hunting spot and put up a ladder stand yesterday…..it’s in the middle of a hardwood ridge the size of a couple football fields, and acorns are starting to drop good.
Went back today to refresh a natural blind and took the camera...the ground will be littered with acorns...
But I'm old and retired...can you cut me a LITTLE bit of slack due to age??
LOL.
Really just have the 2.....the 20 & 28 Early Virginias.
(That 1878 - 12ga SxS double is pretty much a family heirloom / safe queen)
And KBob, just for the heck of it, let me clarify about sharing my load data...you asked about it and I replied.
This load data is what I was testing /using in MY equipment, my components, my methods, etc, etc...for the record, I don't "recommend" that anybody should use my load data...just...
This was the 25yd pattern density / penetration test on a strong 'tuna can' with only 60grns Goex 3F.....bumped up to 70grns 3F for Dove to open the pattern some
Sure...I've never been a fan of the heavy rust brown finish on some guns I've seen...or even true aged steel...so in the case of the barrel in the photo, it was completely 'finished mechanically' as part of the build...BUT...'not colored' in any way.
I wiped it off with Acetone as a...
The small game I have open in central NC now is Doves...squirrel opens mid-October.
20ga Early Virginia Smoothbore - September 3rd
28ga Early Virginia Smoothbore – September 10th
That's me...in fact, I haven't used any wild game in years...give it all away.
There are a few pretty needy families out around the area where I hunt that I've donated my game to for years now...and they're delighted to have deer / turkey / a few squirrels or doves dropped off. Win-Win all the...
IMO, unless somebody slips out behind the house now & then without a license, shoots a deer or three with a hand-me-down that's been in the family for decades, no way the cost of meat is cheaper from hunting...
