    Thanks. I looked at the picture closely and noticed that the small cylinder between the guide head and the spring is missing in my gun. I decided to go ahead and order the part from Numrich. I think it should solve the problem. Thanks for all your help.

    H & R Problem Gentlemen, Thanks for the response. The head of the spring rod does rest on the hammer. When I cock the hammer, the head slides down for a half inch before it starts compressing the spring. There is no hole in the bottom of the spring rod in order to keep the spring compressed...
