Yep, I can use 5.56 for anything I need from plinking, to self defense to hunting. I can throw the .22LR conversion in it and use it for hunting and plinking, along with SHTF scenarios. Its the rifle that would leave my stable last because of its modularity.

I've been running my CMMG chrome kit in my M&P for the last few years without problems with leading or excess wear.

My M&P15OR with free float tube and 3-9 scope will do under 1/2" at 100yrds with Federal Sierra BTHP. Trigger is good as well.

I have and love both, but they are different. The 617 is head and shoulders more accurate with a better trigger. My SP101 took ALLOT of work to get the trigger to an acceptable level, and is accurate in its own right (although not as much so as the 617). That being said, I shoot my SP101...

My 617 with an aluminum cylinder is perfectly fine. Have not had one problem with it at all. I like my SP101 in .22LR or my 617 personally.
