AR-15 Forward Assist - Have You Ever Used It?

Same - the other day actually. Bolt didn't get all the way home (new buffer system installed for a carbine length, collapsible stock) - foward assist did its job as designed.

Cleaning Black Powder Rifles After Shooting

With my traditional, shooting Goex real BP, I will clean as soon as practical after I get home. I see no reason to tempt fate under normal circumstances. If I was on a week long hunt in the mountains, fired a shot and had no good way to break it down and clean it after firing, I wouldn't lose...

    Bizzare bullet behavior 22-250

What rcmodel said ^^ Get yourself some Hornady V-maxes and watch that gun work magic out to much further distances. I use the 55gr. with a 1:14 twist with no issues, and this in on a rilfe designed specifically to snuff prarie dogs at long range.

What power scopes do you use on your 223 Rem. target or varmint rifles??

For prairie dogs, my absolute lowest magnification setup is a 5-15x Bushnell. I prefer the Leupold VX-II with the 1/8 MOA target dot in a 6-18x setup as an all-around long range scope.

    UPS package brings happiness

I came in here expecting to see that you ordered a Fleshlight, but yeah - that's a pretty sweet rig! All joking aside, that's a spectacular display of patience you put on and I'm glad you got it all put together. I agree with Helotaxi in that, if you find the right one, there's nothing wrong...

I know I'll never go to Africa...

On the low end, around $10,000 - the high end? There is no high end with double rifles. I've seen some going for $55,000 and I'm sure that's not the top. EDIT: If you wanna cry a little bit, have a look at Holland & Holland's 2011 pricelist...

I know I'll never go to Africa...

I'd bet money that whoever owned that used rifle previously thought that "it wouldn't shoot" because they put that craptastic scope on itand it shifted zero after every shot. That .458 I bought had some ancient Weaver on it and couldn't keep 6" groups at 100 yards. I shot the same loads with a...

    Decent rimfire target scope?

I have a Weaver 3-9x32 RV-9 Classic Rimfire on my CZ-452 American. It's an excellent deal at all for an adjustable Objective rimfire scope. My only lingering wish with this one is for click adjustments, but considering that this is on a rifle that isn't going to get sighted in constantly, I...

Thanks a lot, walkalong. I really got a serious deal on it. Very lucky.

    match grade barrel

Lilja actually usues button rifling, but they compeltely stress relieve their barrels in a vaccum furnace after rifing to put them back to unstressed state. Obviously, it works. I have had no unusual POI drift using their barrel, nor has more buddy who suggested them to me. Cut rifling is...

    match grade barrel

I re-barreled my Remington 700 VSF in .22-250 with an un-fluted, Lilja 3-groove barrel after several seasons of heavy prairie dog hunting finally smoked the factory barrel. I had it fitted with a muzzlebrake to keep my sight picture after the shot and had the gunsmith put a snake skin finish on...

Do Bolt Action Rifles still have a place in today's military?

Right - but that's $763 vs. the cost of doing business. They will pay what they must to have what they must, but they ALWAYS bid it out against someone else to see if they can get it cheaper. That's why the bids also include the cost of logistics support/depot maintenance in addition to the...

Do Bolt Action Rifles still have a place in today's military?

Oh, trust me. Cost matters. I'm active duty Air Force and presently work for Air Force Material Command in an acquisitions billet. Cost matters with everything. That's the whole reason they have a bidding process. It's also often why stuff gets sent back to the drawing board: "make it work...

Do Bolt Action Rifles still have a place in today's military?

Until someone finds a way to make a semi-auto as cheap and consistently accurate as a bolt gun, the answer is yes.
