My LCP loves Hornady Critical Defense, 100% reliable, very accurate. I also have used, and currently carry Ruger ARX. Again 100% reliable ( the most important aspect), barrier blind, good penetration. I’d rather carry ball ammunition that’s 100% reliable than a questionable jhp.

If all you have is a hammer every problem is a nail. Possible options for a rogue donkey: air horn, bear spray, M80s, stock canes (1-1/18” by 42” crook neck cane), strobe light.

I like the Vedder Pocket Locker for my LCP. It fits nicely in my left thigh cargo pocket.

I’ve removed military crimp by hand with a modified file, by hand with a Lyman reamer, and a RCBS swage. The swager is by far the the easiest.

I have a K98 and suggest the original firing pin may have been dropped, the new pin should work fine. Misfires on military ammo (with hard primers) suggest you make sure the inside of the bolt is clean and lightly lubed. If it is, replace the firing pin spring. Does it fire commercial ammo ok...

I shoot 3.5” MagBlends, my Mossberg 835 will throw a killing pattern at 60 yard. If I can get 5-10 yards more with this new load I’m on board.

My Remington Model 17 (the forerunner of the Ithaca 37) is so smooth that if you rack the slide to cock the hammer and point the barrel straight up and hit the bolt release the bolt will slide completely out of battery. I‘ve never seen another pump gun accomplish this.

Better shotguns IMHO are: Win model 12, Remington model 17, Remington 870, Browning BPS. I’m happy for your purchase, it’s a fine shotgun, but several are as good or better.

Barrel length matters little, patterns matter greatly. I patterned my Mossberg turkey gun with at least 30 turkey loads until I found the perfect combination ( Pure Gold turkey choke with Mag Blends). Lots of work but worth it.

If your only concern is an aggressive/malevolent human carry the lightest center fire you deem adequate. I’d opt for a J frame or an LCP type. 98% of the time it will be not needed. Check all local, state, and federal regs about firearms before you go. BTW a camp hatchet or a good sized fixed...

Back pocket carry is great if you never sit down. I carry my LCP in hot weather either 4 o’clock IWB, or in a sticky pocket holster in my cargo shorts thigh pocket.
