Texas, better than some. CCW for handguns in your car for all non-felons over 21. Open carry for any long gun, anywhere, loaded or not, but I wouldn't try it down town in a metro. Your car is covered by the "Castle Doctrine", as is your house.
The .357 is a fun gun. Carry one in the truck at the ranch. Works fine for short range deer, less than 100 yards. It'll shoot 38's, so it's cheap for plinking.
That was my first "real" gun, too. I am much more accurate with my 6.5" black hawk in .357 than any of my high dollar 1911's. Maybe the longer bbl, maybe the extra 50K of rounds I have shot through it in the last 40 years, maybe all of those early years with toy SAA cap guns...I don't have an answer
