I guess it doesn't make a heck of a lot of difference to me, but in my case at least, I'm not going to invest several hundred dollars in a gun that five years from now, the only way to find ammo is to load your own. Almost all of my guns, both long guns and handguns, are pretty conventional...

As the owner of both.... I would agree with alcmaeon - for just dinkin' around, the SKS is my choice (other than a .22LR). For serious shooting, the M1 is the winner, hands down. ;)
