Loading old 38 spcl projectiles with dried lube

The old lube will probably melt just fine as soon as the powder it touched off. if in doubt, put a match to a loose bullet and see what it does.

Getting ready for my first reload... primers question

Did you say which press you are using? Although lube isn't required, just a little bit of lube makes resizing go smoother/easier. Can't go wrong with AA5. Using a bench rest or sand bags helps consistency when testing & comparing new loads. Yes, several loading books are a good idea...

    S&W 45 long colt 6" barrel

255gn. Cast lead, or Jacketed bullet ? Lyman #49 says, 6.5 - 7.3 grains for W 231. That should be ok or either type bullet. In the mean time, you might want to keep your eyes open for some UNIQUE. Many consider UNIQUE the powder of 1st choice for 45LC.

Why so much Love for Unique?

Unique & Bullseye powders are to hand loading, like salt & pepper are on the dinner table. You can have a whole spice rack full special spices & seasonings, but salt & pepper just plain work good on everything. Same goes for Unique & Bullseye.

Fed up with electronic scale, which beam to purchase

The Lee scale is kind of touchy, but dang!, it sure is accurate & cheap too. If you use a pencil or something to move the slider, it makes it a whole lot easier. Generally, you can't go wrong vintage Ohaus made balances either.

In my opinion, The Lee Classic Cast Turret press set up ( cast iron version) is the way to go these days. It is very popular press for good reason! It works equally well as a single stage press or turret press. I see no reason to start off with a single stage as some people suggest when...
