    Gun safe makeover questions

Inside a gunsafe, I would not use gunsocks - part of the task is meant to be maintaining a consistent, gun-friendly environment inside the safe, but that consistency requires air mobility within the safe. Gunsocks will prevent that airflow. Magnetic strip would be safe enough, although the...

    Blown primers on win brass

If it makes you feel any better, I had a run in with some really bad 243win brass from Winchester 7yrs ago... The flash hole punch had obviously been bent some time during production, and was punching crooked and malformed flash holes through the web. These were not double struck, but were...

    steel targets

Thickness of plates doesn't reduce pitting/divoting - it reduces likelihood for dishing and cracking. Hardness prevents dimples/divots. Limiting maximum impact energy/momentum reduces opportunity for dishing and cracking. Limiting maximum impact velocity and limiting bullet design (no steel...

    steel targets

Because they do. Dimples and divots reflect spall backwards, flat surfaces deflect spall radially. Well documented, well proven. Divots and dimples make dangerous targets.

    Blown primers on win brass

    1) It's Winchester 243win brass - deep analysis here might be overthinking it. They're easily replaced and aren't expensive. 2) Loose pockets cause gas vents like that - a slight fail in the seal of the cup to the pocket allows flow, and then high pressure flow jet-blasts a pinhole like you...

    Which current crono/radar

Nah, it's a good unit, you won't regret the purchase. But like I said, you wouldn't regret waiting for the LabRadar LX either. For the last 8 years, I've seen about 50/50 of LabRadars vs. Magnetospeeds on PRS zero lines before matches. Now, the whole field is Garmins, except for the few dudes...

    Which current crono/radar

Garmin Xero C1: They're on the street, they work reliably, aiming is easy, data interfacing is easy, battery life is great. Gun mounting is awesome, so we can track velocity live without more stuff on the field. Phone transfer is simple/automated. LabRadar LX: I've been able to handle 2 of...

    Little help with .308 sizing.

And REALLY need to be annealing so the springback is the same. OR just have the diameter honed still too small so it’s like using a slight undersized bushing, but not so tight as the standard die (some dies I have measured as as much as 7-8thou under bullet with even thin Hornady brass!).

    Considering a new action

Accuracy is in the barrel. Drivability is in the action. It’s not hard to drive nicer than an R700, but many folks will never demand so much of their rifle to feel a difference.

    Little help with .308 sizing.

It's been WELL before covid since I have done so, and I'm sure other groups offered the same, but Lee, RCBS, Hornady, and Forster all used to offer custom ball and custom neck honing diameters - occasionally it was free, but I think the most I paid was $14 or 19. Nicer to have bushings so I can...

What reloading components have you overbought?

Real talk ^ And with only a FEW exceptions, components have appreciated fast enough over 4-5yr holds to be able to draw greater than the original retail price. It's not enough to consider components an investment engine, BUT it's reliable enough to be comforted that we won't LOSE money on...

What reloading components have you overbought?

For the first half of my reloading life, I bought the sold line that I needed to try a lot of different powders with a lot of different bullets to find loads which would shoot small for my rifles. "Every barrel is different," folks say... But largely, I've figured out how to put loads and...

    Little help with .308 sizing.

For the life of me, I don’t understand why they aren’t selling the “-“ shell holder sets any more, and only selling now the “+” sets.

    Little help with .308 sizing.

You’re missing a lot in the application of these practices here. Yes, if you use a grossly undersized standard die, not a bushing die with a carefully selected neck diameter, you are overworking your brass. Why would you want to go through the trouble of annealing just to throw back excessive...

    Little help with .308 sizing.

You CAN turn your own mandrels if you choose to do so and have the ability, but it’s easier to just buy them. I tend to keep a few mandrels and few bushings around for different lots or brands of brass for a given caliber. Many folks DO neck turn, then use a specific bushing diameter to...
