sounds like the store gave him the wrong ammo.

.357 sig is a necked down 40 but it wont headspace properly and the bullet will rattle down the bore if it would shoot,let alone being a safety hazard.the only way that is correct ammo is if the cases were origionally marked sig,but not necked down and then loaded as 40,which may be the case,but...

the best load manual is just a starting point.different lots as well as a different gun means that you work up.all you need from a manual is a starting point,to work up from.10% under the manual max is usually safe.i like to look thru several manuals for a load with a given powder and bullet...

even when neck sizing a lube should be used.for heavy sizing down i use a lube pad and rcbs lube.for fl sizing i use a spray on lube.for neck only i use powdered moly.yep,the expander works best if polished.

i go a bit farther than resizing on a single stage.i deprime only so i can feel the pressure required.i also like to use a old style tl jr without progressive linkage and a 300 mag cmr die.

i have even had the experience of a starting load having excess pressure,from a published load manual.if the manual does not show pressure a bit of extra caution may be in order.remember,the same exact components in a different chamber can require a starting load as well.

yes powder will get old but the owner will deteriorate faster than properly stored powder.i have shot 50 year old powder that had shown no sign of deteriation.lot to lot variation can be more than what was shown on the load data of 2400 in the earlier post.some of alliants powders are faster...

i normally use a hand priming setup.it doesnt take any longer because i use loading blocks and run all cases thru each operation.used the priming setup off my t-mag on the spartan and thought it needed some re-engineering.the plunger that holds the primer in the arm is a bit too low.some brands...

i suggest a single stage press to start with,and a cast iron body adjustable measure,a decent scale,a universal type case trimmer ,and a pair of calipers.ad goodies as you feel the need.this stuff wil never be outgrown unless a large volume is wanted

many calipers will get a different reading at the base of the jaws than at the tip of the jaws.good calipers can be adjusted.

if you reload a vareity of rounds ,then you will want one measure with each!! it saves setup time.i have a few measures setup for specific charges.
