I took advantage of an earlier offer for my NRA Life Membership and the confirmation arrived pretty quickly. They sent another not too long ago and I signed my wife up. [sorta pissed off the NY State inlaws. too bad] Her paperwork showed up pretty quickly too.
I bought a heavy barrel Coyote last year. It's not something that you'd want to carry on a long hunt, but it is damn accurate [sub moa from a bench] out of the box.

My vote is to pay it forward unless you have a specific want for a .223 rifle or want to start an EBR collection. I have a bunch of 10MM reloads that I'd like to do that with, but the 10MM is such a hot round I'd hate to pass on a kaboom.
I tend to lean towards metal myself. I've shot the polymer frames, but I have a phobia [irrational as it is] of the hammerless polymer with the safety in the trigger. Just don't like it. I also find it easier to get back on target with a firearm that has mass to it like my Beagle or 1911s...
Grew up in OK and my 'rents were from TX and OK. I was shooting a Marlin lever action .22 at 6 and was taught gun handling at an early age. My mother could take it or leave it, but was not the least bit concerned that firearms were in the house.
My wife carries one of these BBP Hampton bags. It seems pretty bullet proof.

I've also been told that bags from Tom Bihn [ http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/CTGY/200 ] are pretty good. And, made in the US to boot.

Here in No VA there aren't too many locations to shoot outdoors so I usually shoot at the NRA range in the NRA HQ bldg. It's a nice range, but I would really prefer to shoot outdoors since it can get quite loud in there when people break out the big bore stuff.
Pre 64 mod 70 in .375 H&H here. Sooting it isn't the end of the world, but it's not something that I want to sit down and run a box of 20 through. My father used to use it hunting Elk in Colorado. They didn't run far after hit.
