When ammo of any type was hard to find, I picked up a case of Silver Bear .45ACP. Having fired maybe 80ish rounds I noticed a few things:

1) Wear/abrasions on the feed ramp, looks like an area of roughness where it used to be smooth. I have fired a lot of rounds from other manufacturers. Apart from a consistent failure to feed Remington Golden Sabre rounds, the pistol eats almost anything. I have never seen such an area of roughness where the bullet/case mouth move up the feed ramp.

2) What appears to be a scratch in the surface of the feed ramp. Again, something I've never seen before despite sending a lot of CCI, Win, Rem, Federal, Cor-Bon, etc. down the barrel.

3) Rather "warm" loadings. While not of the same level as Buff. Bore's +P loads, the noise, muzzle blast, and recoil feel significantly heavier than other "target" .45ACP loads I have fired.

Anybody else have those issues with Silver Bear?

Stating the obvious, I wouldn't use that ammo if it is scratching or leaving rough spots on the feed ramp.

I wonder if it is the case mouth doing that, especially if that ammo uses steel cases.

First off, does your Kimber have an aluminum frame? Silver Bear is a Zinc plated steel cased ammunition and Zinc can be harder than Aluminum. If it's not an aluminum franme, unless you feel or see some type of pitting, it's probably the Zinc rubbing off onto the ramp itself.

As for question 3, cheap ammo doesn't have a super consistant powder charge and the powder used is of low quality. It's going to be loud and have more flash and more felt recoil. Bear, Wolf, TulAmmo all share this shooting quality.

Again, if your 1911 is an Aluminum frame, do not use steel case ammo. Seeing as how you don't feel comfortable with it anyway, it's best you stay away from it for you peace of mind. Stick with CCI, PMC, and Armscor for the cheap brass or aluminum ammo.
