I'd be upset if I was forced to leave my gun in my car trunk (best place for it if you have too unless you have a lockbox in your car) because I was someplace other than a sensitive location such as courthouse or government building and it got stolen or I needed it.

Who didn't see this one coming?

In St. Louis, a lot more guns stolen from cars

May 25

Reports of firearm thefts in St. Louis are up significantly this year, according to police figures.

In the first four months of the year, 183 guns were reported stolen, a 65% increase from the same period in 2014. The total figure probably is higher, because some gun thefts are not reported to polic. Missiouri does not require people to report when guns are stolen.

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said most stolen guns are taken from vehicles. He suspects as more people have bought firearms and obtained concealed-carry permits, mroe are leaving guns unsecured in their cars when they go to venues that prohibit firearms, such as Busch Stadium.

"Criminals have figured this out," he said, adding that in many of the break-ins, the firearm is the only item missing from the car. "That's what they're looking for".

I think this is common knowledge around here, Busch stadium is a prime target because you can't bring it in to the stadium. There obviously has been a huge increase in gun buying around me but there has also been an increase in violent crime. It is absurd how many people get shot nightly and gunshots are fairly common in parts of the city.

I'm fairly convinced most people don't actually carry but just leave their gun in their car. However the increase of stolen guns on the street has far less to do with shootings than the brutal attitudes of people now. There is little regard for human life in parts of town.

Look at Chicago. There were dozens of people shot this weekend and guns are illegal there i believe.

It's been common knowledge around here for 10-15 years, since the Crack epidemic started.

That's why 'NRA' & 'Cold dead Fingers' stickers, and leaving 'car guns' in cars is such a terrible idea.

I have had the window broken out of my truck setting in the driveway, just to steal the car wash quarters I 'used' to leave in the ash trey!!

Best advice, if they look in the window and can see anything of value??

It probably won't be there when the sun comes up the next day.
And you will have a window to replace.

a few years ago thug/punks broke a window in my truck to steal the radio. They broke an $800.00 (thats not a typo) to steal a $150.00 radio!

I don't leave a piece of rust in my truck anymore...much less a gun.

Sometimes it really comes down to a choice between two less than ideal courses of action. If I leave my home armed, which is my normal status, and end up having to go to someplace where guns are prohibited, I face the choice of carrying illegally or leaving my gun in the car. If the location has metal detectors, like a courthouse, then the choice is obvious and I have to take my chances with a car break-in. But if the choice is really mine, and I know that I conceal my firearm fully without printing, I might just choose to carry where I shouldn't rather than leave it in the car.

I'm pretty sure Washington State law says courthouses have to provide secure storage for guns while the person is in court.

This may vary from location to location, but it is at least worth exploring, rather than either of the alternatives mentioned above. (Leave gun at home, carry it in illegally.)

Probably better to just walk up and ask for storage, rather than have a metal detector announce your status. IMO, this would look more like the situation was under your control, rather than theirs...
