I turn 63 this year and I come to the realization that I have more than enough 9 mm brass to last me the rest of my life. I know many say it is a waste of time to separate 9mm brass but since I was culling A Merc and E.D.P for the scrap bucket I figured what the heck. If you were reducing your amount of 9 mm brass, which of the following would you keep, sell (trade) or put in the scrap bucket?

Cor-Bon
FC NT
WCC (no crimp) (some w/Date, some w/9 mm Luger)
AP 15
Tulammo
*I*
IMI
A USA
CBC
CCI
RWS
G.F.L.
FC
PPU
Geco
Blazer
-PMC-
PMC
P.M.C. 9mm (small font)
R-P
Win
Speer 9x19
Speer 9mm Luger
HRTRS
.FC.

Thanks, I appreciate your input.

I do not get rid of anything (brass) if it is still good. I mean if you have so much you could be on the TV show Hoarders then maybe, :)but how much room does it take up, Say in 5 gal buckets??

Heck, I do not even look at 9mm headstamps, I just load it. It all works, I find no difference in my shooting.

That's the way I used to feel about it and if it was only 9mm brass I could probably hold on to all of it, but when I include the brass for 7 other calibers of handguns and 10 additional rifle calibers it's starting to get a little crowded in my reloading room. Besides, I tend to prefer shooting my 40 S&W, 45 GAP and 357 Magnums so currently the 9 mm gets very little range time (unless my wife goes).

I don't scrap any based on headstamp. A lot of reloaders don't like to load Ammoload, but I don't have any issue loading Ammoload.

Sounds like we could be getting some 9mm in the PIF thread soon:D

Having faced that decision a decade ago, I chose Remington because they hadn't changed their headstamp for about a decade. Likewise WIN 9mm Luger headstamp hadn't changed but Winchester's case weights had changed alot over those same years. A year after I went with Remington, they started changing headstamps aperiodically BUT their case weights didn't change. I'm sticking with Remington and don't regret that decision.

I load mixed brass for practice and keep all that loads. The only brass I scrap on site is Amerc which doesn't reload 1X. I don't keep any non brass cases.

What do you intend to do with the brass you keep?

Its all 9mm, right?

So basically it will be fired in a gun that needs to maintain 10 MOA accuracy, right?

Other than visible damage, steel case, or Berdan primer, what reason is there to condemn a particular brand of 9mm brass?

Give it away

If I had that much that I knew I would never use, I would give it to whoever would pay the shipping cost. A good deed is never wasted.

I do not pitch any cases until I discover I have trouble reloading it, usually the rims will not fit in my shell holder.

Amerc is the only exception.

Since the OP asked; "If you were reducing your amount of 9 mm brass, which of the following would you keep, sell (trade) or put in the scrap bucket? "

I have been in the same boat, I had over 10K of 9mm Brass. After my own research I decided to keep approximately 5K of;

WIN
SPEER
F-C
Starline

I used the rest for credit at Xtreme Bullets ($2.10 per pound).

I collect brass at the range every week, I keep those above and use the rest for trade, free or sale.:D:D:D

Lefty

Also assuming you have equal amounts of all those headstamps. if you have to thin then get rid of the ones you have the least of. I really do not know of any "bad" brass (yes, A merc) but most preferences are anecdotal,

Have a random drawing:D

I scrap any AMERC, blazer and a few others. I have a scrap yard right up the street from me.

i'd shoot it all, and just stop picking it back up

that's like giving it away, except without paying for postage. someone who wants it more than you will come along and pick it up.

i sure wouldn't separate them, but mostly cause i can't read the headstamps anymore

9X19 cases: I prefer some over others, simply because they are 1. more consistent in my Lee turret press, 2. they are durable, 3. they provide good neck tension, and lastly 4. some have good karma with my CZs. I sort by headstamp.
In order of preference:

WIN
R&P
WCC Nato, reamed
FC
I do keep, and have used PPU brass successfully. It's a stout case with a tight primer hole. It doesn't run as smoothly in my press as the above cases.

P.S. I've never purchased a 9 x 19 case. All have been range pick-ups. I too have quite a lot of sized, deprimed/reamed, sorted and tumbled 9mm brass

i'd shoot it all, and just stop picking it back up

This is solid advice.

The times I've downsized, I'd keep:
Speer
Fed (FC/FCNT)
Win
Blazer
R-P

But Taliv's advice is very good. That is the easiest way. It depends on whether or not you think it's worth sorting.

I guess that I should consider doing this but, what the heck, the kids can do it after I'm gone!

Actually, I have done this a few times during some of the recent shortages. I usually keep the old stand-bys like RP, Win and FC. In rifle, I'll also keep any Norma of LC brass.

Really, how many buckets of 9mm or 40S&W does one need?

I would toss any AMERC (which you didn't list).
I also toss any with crimped primers. I have enough crimps to remove in 5.56, don't need to practice on 9mm pistol brass when I have a bunch.

Other than that I toss when the primer pockets get loose, the case neck splits, or after lots of reloadings the case neck will to longer hold tension on the bullet.
(most go for reason 1 or 2)

This exactly. AMERC is junk and the work involved to remove a crimp ring is just not worth it. Generally, everything else that's boxer primed and brass is a go.

I only throw out brass when it cannot be reloaded or if there is a visible defect. I do not go by headstamp. I have not found headstamps to be an indicator of quality. I believe there is quality differences within a particular brand or headstamp. My $.02

Of those headstamps, I don't like:

*I*, R-P: Both of these seem to stick to the powder funnel, making the upstroke on my Dillon very difficult
RWS: Doesn't like to take a bell.

FC-NT: probably starts out with crimped pockets, since it uses non-toxic primers. I suspect it's fine brass once the pockets have been swaged.

I go through mine to remove defects anyway but will load anything boxer primed. I do however segregate those that have the internal step to use with the lighter bullets so I have no bulged cases and the crimped primers the first time through to remove the crimps. When I sold off some of my 9MM brass I would package it by headstamp in quart Zip-Loc freezer bags.
