Chicago, program to deescalate gang violence defunded

While I agree that they could have more than likely found different areas to cut it also goes to show that the effect they had in the community was not a lasting one. If in the month after they stopped their work 46 people were killed in one area you have to figure that their message was not really sinking in.

I work with a lot of Gangster Disciples and other Chicago based gangs and we have a decent population of Chicago native gang members here I can tell you this: while the older members have recognized that the life only leads to death, the younger (35 and lower) members simply do not care. They have grown up in a culture that glorifies the gangster, drugs, murder and money. They do not know anything else. They fully expect to die before they make 30. And it does not bother them.

They will look for any slight, no matter how minor to you or I, to visit violence on someone. If you owe a debt it would be wise to pay up, or get beat down. I have seen guys get beat for not paying rent, or for not giving up a shot of coffee. They are thugs, bullies and cowards. Without a fundamental shift in thinking this issue will not go away. They truly believe that they are owed everything, that they deserve to be rich and drive expensive cars. Too long has the Govt made it acceptable to walk around with your hand out.

I am all for programs that teach conflict resolution and thinking skills, but out of 100 people you talk to maybe only 10-20% will actually take it to heart. And in my experience it is the older guys getting out of the game anyway, or the younger guy that had a wake up call. The only end for a true believer, a hard core gang member is the grave.

Throwing money at a problem doesn't seem to work anyway. Perhaps there is no solution but to let them kill each other until only those with a higher brain function are left.

Bottom line is they can't do anything to help themselves without .gov funding according to Autry Phillips. God forbid someone in that community intervenes without $ from the caucasion overlords they despise.

In these "communities" the villain is guns (as in "gun violence") rather then those that are really responsible for the killings that take so many innocent lives. The government and urban media push this concept because the truth presents them with a likely unsolvable number of expensive issues, and guns - in and of themselves - are a convenient scapegoat.

Until this changes, and/or the residents wake up and smell the coffee, the situation is not going to change and the killings will continue. :banghead:

Chicago doesn't have a "gang violence" problem. That's why the program was deemed unnecessary.

As we all know, Chicago has a "gun violence" problem.

The only problem with this is that innocent people get hurt, either intentionally or just wrong place at the wrong time. If not for that, I'd be all for letting them shoot it out til it's the last man standing, then having him shot, too.

Reality is, though, a good many victims of gang violence are regular folk whose only sin is being unable to avoid these thugs.

I never thought that CeaseFire was money well spent in the long term as it created a career path for gang affiliates to morph into violence interrupters in exchange for a paycheck. In most cases their gang ties would remain tacitly intact to ensure their credibility and the continued existence of the entire mechanism was predicated upon the ongoing survival--and even growth--of institutional gang infrastructure. Letting myself lapse into even more cynical thoughts on the subject, it could be seen as a public subsidy for gangs/ threat groups. Also, much of the CeaseFire leadership were dyed-in-the-wool anti's as well.

Ceasefire is one of many scam programs in Illinois to use taxpayer money to pay the "connected". Total waste of money and giving free money to gang members and criminals should not sit well with the taxpayer.

Chicago has long walked the fine line between a first world city and a banana republic. The city has been a haven for corruption for over a century. At this point, it'd be better to just fire bomb the city like 1944-45 Tokyo than bother trying to figure out a way to fix it.

The people of Chicago are the problem. While not all of them are part of the problem, they are also not part of the solution. The final solution is for them and the city to no longer exist.

Hmm. Yet another failed "program" in Chicagoland. Surprise, surprise. I suspect there are a number of reasons that could be blamed as having caused it's failure. However, I suspect "flawed premise" will not be considered one of them. Inserting an "interrupter" into a potentially violent situation is not even close to the idea of "attacking the problem at its source." It was a mild distraction at best.

They'll never acknowledge that the armed populace in the rest of the state is a very big part of why we don't look like Chicago.
