Gents:

Anyone ever place a fixed stock on an 18 inch AR (barrel)? Any reason not to do that?

Thanks!

No reason not to I guess. I once put a Shorty upper on my Colt SP1 lower because I didn't have another lower for it yet. Worked okay, just looked a little strange. Finally got a lower and a Colt aluminum collapsible stock for it so it looks like this now:

No reason. I have a fixed stock rifle and a carbine. Like them both.

Only reason not to would be if the length was not right for you so an adjustable would yield a better fit.

Then there also are "fixed" stocks that are adjustable for length and cheek weld. They are "fixed" in the sense that the adjustments are cumbersome to do, but they are generally rock solid once set.

The fixed stock recoil assembly works with pretty much any properly made barrel or upper in .223 or 5.56 NATO, and the vast majority of barrels in other AR15 calibers as well.

If you want similar flexibility with a telestock, the VLTOR A5 system provides it.

With a carbine buffer tube, you may, or may not, need to play around with varying buffer weights to get the best function with some barrels.

Anyway, go right ahead with a 18" barrel and rifle stock.

I'd like to get a more the "solid" feel and weld from a fixed stick. Magpul's offerings seem to be well received.

^^^ditto solid feel

Go for it.

I put an A1 fixed stock on a midlength gas 16" barreled carbine. I like the feel and look. It is like the gun was meant to be that way.

Something like this?

That's actually just a spare lower on my PSA Ultralight CHF upper. I have thought about building an 18" - 20" Faxon Gunner upper for it though. The MOE fixed stock is a little heavier than a standard carbine stock, but not by that much, it balances well and it is quite solid.

Good point about weight and balance. The A1 stock I mentioned earlier increased weight a bit and balanced out the gun better than the standard issue collapsible stock. Of course that might be depending on the weight of the barrel, too.

I used the Magpul FCS a good bit. It's essentially the 3rd position out on a carbine extension. Solid, reasonably light, I think it was around 10oz.

I use the BCM Mod 0 on everything now, and I have little interest in changing. Minimal wobble, tougher than necessary, and lightweight.

One thing about a fixed stock is with a scope it changes your eye relief from standing to sitting at a bench. When your sitting your face gets closer to the scope than when your standing. With a red dot or irons it doesn't matter.

As others have mentioned, any barrel and gas combination is compatible with a rifle tube and buffer. All things being equal though, I think a carbine setup it an improvement for any barrel length. Not only is it adjustable for different positions and clothing thicknesses, but even a stock with moderate wobble will feel fine when held snugly. I have yet to buy a stock with a friction/tension lock, and have yet to feel that I need one. The #1 reason some many people in the competitive world have gone back to the fixed rifle stock is because they are running a low mass BCG from JP Enterprises, who only makes their low-mass buffer and spring in rifle length.

I've switched all my AR's to Magpul fixed carbine stock or their fixed rifle stock. I hate wobble in any buttstock.

I would prefere an A1 fixed stock with a 20 inch pencil barrel for a nice light weight, potent, and accurate package.

Yep, a fixed stock would work fine OP. I also prefer them over collapsibles for cheek weld reasons. I use the Magpul MOE fixed rifle stock with an extended butt pad to bring it to A2 length.

This is a 20", but you get the idea.
