:fire:The comment I posted: Yeh, NYC has been an elitist-only enclave in which the right to own a gun is essentially denied to all but the wealthy since the Sullivan act was passed to deny the Irish and Italians arms over a century ago. This is a pointless comparison because it purports to show 'ends of the spectrum' when in fact most states have gun purchase and carry laws like those in Oregon. NYC gun laws are an anachronistic throwback with racist underpinnings. Chicagoans suffered under even more stringent conditions until they were recently relieved of their plight by the SCOTUS. The insanity of NYC's laws are only a solid case away from being cast down as unconstitutional nonsense as well. It will happen sooner or later.:cuss:

The antis' rhetoric writes checks that their stats can't cash.

According to the FBI's 2012 Uniform Crime Report:

Population/murders/rate per 100000 people
NYC: 8,289,415/419/5.1
Portland, OR: 598,037/20/3.3

https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/u...aw_enforcement_by_state_by_city_2012.xls/view

Okay, how about by state?
Population/murders/rate per 100000 people
NY:18,146,686/666/3.7
OR:3,241,382/73/2.3

https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/u...rime-in-the-u.s.-2012/tables/5tabledatadecpdf

So, NYC with all its strict gun control still has a murder rate more than 50% greater than Portland, Oregon and over twice that of the state of Oregon! Even comparing NY state to OR, NY still has a 50% greater murder rate.

Antis are so focused on hyping up tragic but rare events that they completely ignore the big picture. Advocates of gun rights need to be able to fight the antis' rhetoric with hard numbers, which are almost universally in our favor.

I think this is a reason that, in their push for more "gun violence research", antis conveniently ignore the fact that the numbers the FBI already collects are not in their favor.

"Do gun control laws work?"

Check out the scorecard for Chicago, home of some of the toughest antigun laws in the nation......

My smaller city of Tallahassee, Florida - the vapid and libtarded city government is looking to CHICAGO for info on how to handle "gun violence". Sheesh........ Maybe they will look to NYC next?

The worst part of the NYC system: "Besides the standard federal checks, the Police Department can reject anyone it determines lacks the “character and fitness” for a license. The department examines individuals’ arrest histories, even if charges were dismissed and sealed." So that means they also check "rumors", "hear-say" and social media (Facebook, Twitter...). In essence in NYC, the 2nd Amendment is for the rich and politically connected. It's not "by RIGHT" as described in the Constitution.

But, but, but... All those murders in NY are from guns just flooding in from places with lax laws! Places like Oregon!

Before becoming a nurse in the Navy, a friend of mine was an EMT in Brooklyn, NY. On average she dealt with 3 intentional gunshot victims PER DAY. But since it is really difficult to get a firearm let alone carry one in NYC, more gun control is the answer...makes perfect sense.

If the entire nation had the same level of gun control laws as Chicago, their high crime rates would disappear. (yeah, right)

PLEASE do compare new York city to new York state = bet you see a HUGE disparity in deaths due to any cause .

Other than automobiles, they might be close in that number.

Guess we need more auto control, than gun control ?/.

I was born and raised in NYC, now been in Western NYS for over 40 years = HUGE DIFFERENCE.

I live in the "Sunny South", and even I know about the infamous "Sullivan Act". What an arrogant and superficial attempt to appear "law abiding" and advancing safety from criminality, by denying ordinary citizens the ability to protect themselves, while availing criminals to have an advantage because "guns" are supposed to be "bad".

Why do NY citizens continue to allow this "claptrap" baloney ?

No one will ever convince the antis that gun control is not the answer to end crime. You can present all the facts you find but they will fall on deaf ears. The antis have their minds made up and cannot be changed. Perhaps that is a sign of mental illness with them.

Ha, ha. Yeah, pretty much. Funny how many antis forget that despite our total prohibition on cocaine it manages to find its way all the way here from Colombia. Funnier yet, cocaine is perishable so it has to be continuously replenished whereas a smuggled firearm can last a century.

I guess for some people prohibition only "works" when it happens to agree with their politics.

My favorite Uncle used to toss around the word Balderdash to keep himself from swearing around me as a kid. He had served 31 years in the USAAF/USAF and knew how to swear. He first uttered an F-bomb in my presence when I was 17 and *knew* he was mad. So in keeping with the family friendly nature of THR I went with Balderdash---It's hard to not go harder on the NY Times for her daily anti-gun rhetoric and half-truths.

I didn't find a place to make comment. I wanted to point out that the school shooting is an aberration unlike the constant drum, drum, drum of murders and shootings in NYC.

But then I thought of the gang violence in Portland.

New York doesn't have to check the scorecards for Chicago. All the need to do is look at their own to see how dismal they are.

To quote Dr. Phil for New York, especially New York City: "How's that working out for you?"
