Recently received a very good condition early-2nd Gen G17 that has the non-upgraded internals and the 90-degree ejection port.

I've determined from my internet snooping that it is a candidate for the 6-part upgrade (the "firing pin upgrade").

The question I have is, why does it need this upgrade and what could/would happen if I didn't get the upgrade?

Apparently (if what I've read is true) an LEO had an AD (and his armorer had an AD and a short burst of fully-automatic fire) which prompted Glock to have a recall/upgrade for the 6-part upgrade.

Should I go ahead and have the upgrade done or is the original design OK?

G17 firing pin upgrade

How do you tell what generation Glock you have? I have a really old G17, but have no idea how to determine what it "needs".

Here is a picture I tracked down from an old thread I replied to. A picture is worth a thousand words...

Now, the thousand words. :D Basically, the 1st generation Glocks (17 and 19 only) had a smooth front and back strap. The 2nd generation sported the textured grips and the 3rd generation added the finger grooves and light rails.

G17 firing pin upgrade

I poked around and found this page . Does anyone know - is this information reliable? Got mine out of the back of the safe, I haven't shot some of them in over 10 years - and they're all (G19, G17 and G21) eligible for the "upgrade". I guess I'll call Glock and see what to do. I've got one the G21's on the page that is eligible for the "slide modification". If this is going to cost an arm and a leg, I'll put them back in the safe and probably forget about it. They worked last time I shot them.

The G21 "slide modification" is free. That shouldn't put you back too much!:) They'll recut the breech to 15* and refinish the slide. Return postage is on them. Glocks' upgrades are ALWAYS free.

Spoke with Glock this morning. Ship it to them (on me) and they'll do the 6-part firing pin upgrade and slide modification for free. Plus, I'm going to have them refinish the slide for $45.

Never dealt with Glock customer service before . . . good guys.

Good guys?

You have to be kidding!

1. They sell you a weapon with a design defect.

2. They ssue a recall (but call it a "recommended upgrade"), and

3. then want YOU to pick up the shipping ($25-$45) so they can correct THEIR mistake!

And yes, it is a very important recall/upgrade. Without the upgrade, your Glock can slam-fire and/or go full-auto. So, Rick, if you have old Glocks that have not had the "upgrade," it is very much of safety issue. If you push, they ought to pay the shipping--they are the ones that sold a defective firearm.

Let's see, free G17. Not the first owner, maybe not even the third or fourth owner. My local dealer sends it to Glock (won't tell you what he'll charge me to send it but let's just say that he'll be very good to me), I get the slide refinished for $45.

So I walk away from the dealer when it's returned from Glock with a basically brand new firearm for just slightly more than $45.

Yeah, I think I'll just swallow the slightly more than $45 and take the brand new gun. (I'll work an extra hour tomorrow to make up for the cost)

Just to make up for their obviously terrible products, I think that while I'm there I'll pick up that new G21 I saw at the dealer the other day.

And I wasn't kidding.
