Maybe it's the kid in me, but despite being officially old(29!), I just need to brag about my birthday gifts.

It started with my mom. It took some convincing(You want a shovel for your birthday?) but she finally ordered me a Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel. Even since reading Mr. Fred Perrin's review that someone was crazy enough to post, I've wanted one. It's not here yet, but soon...I too will be chopping trees. http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/2292/shovelrev.htm

My wife, being a sweet darling, bought me some books I wanted. First, while I have read Unintended Consequences, she got me my own copy to read and loan out(once she is done reading it!). Then she got me a copy of Lever Action, a collection of essay's by L. Neil Smith. A man of very strong oppinions. And, for the books she couldn't find, my mother-in-law gave me a Borders gift certificate. I think I'm going to use that to pick up a few Claire Wolfe books. Most importantly though, my wife gave me permission to go shopping!

So, starting what is going to prove to be a very expensive relationship, I headed to Sportsmans Warehouse. Since my wife is such an angel, I used my birthday gift to get a deer rifle for her. Ended up getting a NEF Handi-Rifle in .270 Winchester. I am kind of borderline worried that .270 might be too much for her, but, if it is, I pay the 90 bucks to get a 7mm/08 barrel fitted on it.

For a scope, the guy behind the counter recommended a Nikon Prostaff 2-7 power variable. And, I confess, it is the only thing that has me slightly nervous in the whole deal. You see, the scope was listed as being for a shotgun. But, the gentleman said he had used them on rifles before and not had an issue. After thnking things through, I felt that if a scope could handle the recoil of a shotgun, a rifle shouldn't hurt it. So, in the end, the choice was mine...hopefully I didn't make a bad one. Rifle and scope together cost about $350 dollars. Not a bad deal.

Now, tomorrow, when I get off graveyard shift, the wife and I are gonna go sight it in. All in all, it's not that bad growing old.

1911Tuner helped me do a three shot sight in, not too long ago with my brother's NEF .270 WIN. I'll tell you the recoil won't put you on your butt, then again it's no pussycat either, she will have to shoot it to decide. Then again that thing sure will take a deer down in a hurry. I'm opting for a .308 WIN barrel for my NEF when I get around to sending it off.

Good Luck to Ya
