Hi all,

I thought some of the Mosin Nagant fans stuck in the office might get a kick out of this. I recently de-cosmolined a T-53 for a friend. I decided I'd better test it out to make sure it was safe before giving it back. ;)

I put 15 rounds through it, just to be sure, and also broke out my m44 to compare accuracy. :scrutiny:

Love these old guns on a cloudy day!

They are fire breathers. You can see the flash on a clear day.

Which begs the question,,,
Why are they such fire breathers?

Is it only with mil-surp ammo?

I've fired hundreds of bolt-action milsurps,,,
None of them have a muzzle flash even close a Nagant.

Geezzz, my wife would say thats me after hot chicken wings and beer. Other wise YoBama may be hitting you with the "carbon Tax".:D

Oh it's the ammo. Some loads are made for the long barrel 91/30s or machine guns. The short barrel M44, M38 and M91/59 have alot of powder burning out the end.

I also love the blast on my M44. There is nothing like it. Longer rifles burn all the powder before the barrel ends, not the M44. Excellent pictures.

Has anyone ever tested the carbine models with modern ammo or powder and see it the flash is still there? It would be an interesting experiment.

I'm glad to see the bayonet in the forward position while firing!
You know, on my m44 it doesn't seem to make any difference, bayonet forward or folded. The T-53 wasn't shooting quite as tight a group as my m44, so I tried both bayonet forward and back, and it still didn't group as tight. The barrel was well used... well, well used. I probably wouldn't have bought it, as the stock was beat too (is it just me, or are the Chinese harder on stocks?), but it will be a fun plinking gun, and the bluing was some of the best I've seen on a Mosin.

What I read is that the Chinese did not have access to mass quantities of good stock wood, so the typical Type 53 stock wood is not to European, Russian or American expectation.

Great photographs. I love the flame from these guns.

To help with accuracy have the barrel recrowned. You can do it yourself cheaply, Go to YouTube and look up recrowning a barrel and they have good instructions. All you need is an electric drill, a brass bolt and some compound.

You can also order a crowning tool from Brownells for about $100. This will give you either an 11 degree or a 45 degree crown.

I just did this to one of my pistols and groups went from 3 inches at 25 yards to one ragged hole.
