How can an AR be "modified to make it more poweful."

well, theyre probably talking about cosmetic modifications, but the easiest way to actually make one more powerful is get off the .223/5.56 round, its awful, step it up to 6.8SPC or 300 blackout

I suspect more media hype against the nasty black guns. Whatever they can do to push an agenda and promote the idea that simply owning a "black rifle" makes you inherently unstable and dangerous.

In the case of the San Bernadino terrorist couple, there have been reports that one or maybe both of the guns had been either converted to fire full-auto or had been monkeyed with attempting to do so.

As well as a few other things like (possibly) removing the "bullet button" mag releases.

Those kind of lies need to be refuted by those of us that know better. Most of the erroneous stuff they are inferring are illegal or just plain impossible.
I liken it to Hillary making up that 40% of all gun show sales are done without a background check. Completely false but if it goes unrefuted it gets repeated in the media and believed by the unknowing.

The press tends to wander off when trying to appear knowledgable on firearms. They also can act as an echo chamber.

If you are referring to the recent San Bernardino shooting, there was some confusion as to the function of the California-mandated bullet button. I watched commentator Gregg Jarrett on Fox News say it made the AR fully automatic. Kind of a "turbo" button.

If the AR's used in this instance had normal magazine releases and were used with magazine capacity exceeding 10 rounds, I guess those features might be construed as adding "power".

My vote is for bumpfire stocks...

What the media is reporting is fairy tales. The only substance it has comes out of the back end of a cow. The media types never know what they're talking about. That's why they have staff writers.

The two AR rifles had been legally bought four years ago by an acquaintance of the man.

Both apparently were CA AWB compliant: they had ten round magazines and instead of a thumb operated magazine catch had a "bullet button" that required a seperate tool to release the magazine--a punch or a .223 cartridge or "bullet".

In between time, the wouldbe jihadists had replaced the "bullet button" with a standard magazine catch and acquired at least one thirty round magazine if not more. One of the guns appeared to have cuts made inside the receiver intended to allow replacing the AR15 semi-auto fire control group with an M16 select-fire (semi- or full-auto) FCG. The conversion was never made but because it looks like it may (or may not) have been attempted is a big deal in the media.

To the news media, replacing the bullet button with a standard catch, having magazine over ten rounds, and giving the appearance of a failed full-auto conversion modifies the guns to make them more powerful.

Most of us here, modifying an AR to make it more powerful would be converting it to fire a cartridge more powerful than .223 Rem/5.56 NATO.

Yeah. These media pin-heads heard about the "bullet button" and went wild with it. Just outrageous and very bad journalism. With it matter? Nope! Nobody cares that our "journalists" are just trained animal acts these days.

"More powerful" Very subjective at best.

I get a little worried when I read or hear such propaganda.
I'm not a journalist, but when I was forced to write in college I took the time to at least get a rudimentary education on the subjects that required some writing. It pays off and you look less foolish and get a diploma at the end.
It makes me question everything else they write about when I read about "More Powerful AR's".
I would imagine though if you're in the business of pushing an agenda, all of that falls to the wayside.

Sure the media is all in cahoots trying to take our guns away. But 99% of the journalists in the nation are just trying to pay the bills and keep their bylines coming. They're dumb about firearms, just like they're dumb about cars, ulcers, the space program, etc. We sometimes do ourselves a bit of a discredit when we (in our earnest and rightful frustration) find a pervasive ground-level conspiracy to harm our cause in the thousands of daft things reporters get wrong every day. If we had the ability to view all topics with the same scrutiny and understanding that we do firearms and gun law, we'd see the wild absurdities reporters commit with facts about guns swamped and utterly drowned in the sea of inane blather they spew about everything else.

There seem to have been conflated issues, with the somewhat surprising amount of money the terrorist couple had in the bank being somehow tied in with the "huge" cache of weapons (like...four?) and ammo (not much by my estimation). The rifles would have been something at or under $900 each these days. A thousand round case of 5.56mm ammo might go for about $300. Pistols @ $500 each or so. I won't speculate on the pipe bomb making supplies, but that's an historically low-tech/low-cost endeavor.

So it's like any other high-profile case. One bit of info is let out and the reporters grab it and mix it with three other bits, ten rumors they heard, what the supposed eye-witnesses are saying on the morning shows and AM radio call-in, etc.

Remember, few people who are ever interviewed about anything recognize much truth or factual reporting in the news piece that eventually airs.

They just water down the facts with drivel. Furthering the dumbing down of America. I feel dumber already.
