1911 slide front searations, eye wash or purpose?

Dave,

Now, those I can live with! But, they look like a pain in the a$$ to cut. Looks like some deep sharp checkering and then the points were blunted to get that countersunk look, but I can't see the detail to well. Not blowing smoke up your skirt, but very nice indeed.

Press Check? Every gun is loaded until I verify its not! I demand something more positive than a press check before declaring a gun is unloaded -- what if the extractor hook broke when that round was chambered?

Wally, try

1) dropping the mag and opening the slide completely to verify that the gun is unloaded.

2) peforming a press check to verify that the gun is loaded and that the exractor is in fact snapped over the rim and performing it's function.

In this thread its:

press check to verify the gun is loaded

and

press check to show clear.

I've little use for any special press check techique or accoutraments on the gun to facalitate doing it. Never seen an auto loader yet that I can't simply partially retract the side with my off hand to accomplish the verify loaded thing.

For clear, I drop the mag full cycle the slide to eject anything in the chamber and then re-rerack with my off hand pushing up the slide lock to verify empty.

Guns without slide locks or without external slide locks I either make sure I have an empty mag to insert or use one of those plastic dohickies to stick in the ejection port.

Didn't mean to be another fire starting cow. Seeing what appeared to be a SA mil-spec with front slide serrations just made me think this has gone too far without there being some good reason for it that I was unaware of. Seems clear to me now that there isn't. The ILS on the SA milspec IMHO should disqualify the use of the term "milspec". Or will this start another fire? :)

man it amazes me how venemous people get over this.

It's SERRATIONS. little notches in metal. To add to it many manufacturers of your favorite style of firearm do indeed make it without them.

sheesh.

Seems pretty civil to me by internet standards, nowhere near the venem of plastic vs. metal guns or Glock vs. everything else :)

At least plastic has a serious upside in much lighter weight. For a carry piece if my plastic gun melts into goo after shooting all the ammo I can carry while dispatching gobblins, I'd say it was good enough and would much appreciate all the time spent lugging around less weight prior to this.

The discussion is fairly civil. I think the point is why get upset or put so much into something that can be easily ignored. You don't want forward slide serrations, DO NOT buy a gun with them. Lots of them out there.

Buy one of these if you do not want them.

Or remove them, like I did on this Colt XSE.

Or get you a custom gun built without them.

Why complain about something that is within your power to control?

PS: All these are mine as is this one. This pistol just flat kicks butt in competition.

Oh for crying out loud guys.

BTW, I shoot a million rounds a year and my dad is double tough. So is my mommy.

Isn't a personal attack and it was supposed to be a joke. What I mean is round count doesn't necessarily indicate preparedness for a SHTF scenario nor is it an indication of proficiency on the range.

I sincerely believe folks that are intimately familiar with their firearms, have a well developed index, and can also shoot fast and accurately, are miles ahead of those who do not have those qualities, be it on the range or on the street.

What I am just plain sick and tired of are the mall ninjas and tactical wannabees who haven't a clue about what it takes to shoot, but they loudly proclaim they could whoop Rob Leatham in a gun fight because of their superior mindset and tactical thought processes.

Back to the topic. I like forward serrations and they don't impede my draw.

I can see the complaint about tearing up holsters. I have a Springfield that you could shave with. Those things are sharp.

Absolutely right, I'm downright afraid of the serrations on my Springer- it only seems a matter of time before they slice up some flesh- My only complaint about my Springfield. ANd I wish it didn't have the front serrations if only for cosmetic reasons, but I can live with them.

eye wash or purpose?

Getting to be more like eyesore more'n more..:barf:

Anyhow, I went from - liking them - to - not really caring one way or the other - to - disliking them.

The reason is pretty simple. It isn't so much the serrations as it is the "how much crap can we hang on a 1911?" thingie. The front serrations were simply the last straw before the last straw. I swear to JMB, it's just a matter of time until some yo-yo sticks a compass in the grips - - or better yet a GPS in keeping with the "Modern Hi Tech Tactical" theme, then serrates the whole damn slide.

Now you want to talk useless junk, then you are talking about a Rail on a handgun, A handgun does not need a rail or a light mounted on it. But it seems that there are a lot of folks that want one cuase the manufacturers are sure making them, SIG GSR, Kimber TLE RL, Springfield makes one too.

YUCH ruins the classic lines of a fine firearm.

The nice thing is that these same manufacturers make similar models without a rail so that those who find utility in a mounted weapon light can have them, and those that don't care for them don't have to buy them...your free market at work :D.

Safe shooting,

Oh yeah, light rails. Take one 1911, add a light rail, toss in a tungsten guide rod. That spells Limited 10.
