Hey gang,
I have a recently been think about a 9mm 1911, however I have know idea whats out there except for the SA ultra compacts. Any brands to look out? Basically I am just looking for a 5 to 4 inch full lenght grip 9mm 1911. I am pretty familar with 1911s but never dealt with them in 9.

Springfield makes a full size stainless 1911 in 9mm... I think they aren't quite a full production run thing, just something they make from time to time. Usually they are seen with fake Bomar type adjustable sights. I had one that was outstanding except for one bad mag that was replaced for free.

I'm not an expert on 1911's but, I think Dan Wesson makes what you're looking for. I'll wait for someone more knowledgable to chime in.

I've seen Colt Gov't Models (Series 70, at least) and Combat Commanders in 9mm, and IIRC Kimber had a limited run of full-size 9mm. I've got a Combat Commander (Series 80) in 9mm, and I love it.

How interchangable are the parts between the 9mm and .45 ACP models? Is it just a slide change and new magazine like the Marvel .22 kit?

If so, how hard is it to pick up the parts?

Conversion of .45 to 9mm requires a complete upper assembly with magazine AND a 9mm/.38 ejector installed on the receiver. And some luck to get a compatible frame feed ramp.

Parts are not heavy.

That's a lot slide O mass to push with a 9mm. I would think that some sort of minim power factor would be required to cycle the action correctly, like slightly hot 124gr round to cycle the action reliably. The only 1911 style pistol that was made/scaled around the 9mm is the Star-B I think?

Nope I was wrong the Star B looks like a 1911 copy chambered for the 9mm and nothing more.

Man, would I love a scaled 1911 style pistol for 9mm, but the just a longer stock.

Kimber makes a Stainless Target II in 9mm. I can honestly tell you that I love mine and I know of two others who claim they are happy with theirs.

I would love to be able to shoot 1911, and not have the extra cost of the .45. I love shooting cheap 9mm.

I have SA Loaded 9mm that's very reliable, accurate, and fun to shoot. It's a great way to get cheap trigger time, and feels much closer to the "real deal" than those .22LR conversion kits.

STI makes their full sized 5" Trojan 1911 in 9mm. I shoot one all the time with factory 115 gr ammo and it cycles perfectly. They also offer the Trojan Longslide version (with a 6" slide) in 9mm. Mr Camp has one of those and really likes it. No problem cycling the 1911 slide (5" or 6") with factory 9mm ammo. The recoil feels like a .22 in that gun.

ditto what bountyhunter says.

I got my STI Trojan 9mm from Dawson Precision, with front optic sight and S&A arched MSH with magwell. Very soft shooting, almost like a 22lr pistol.

In the late 1940s/early 1950s Llama made a scaled down 1911. It would actually fit perfectly in a P38 Military holster.

The only big differences were no grip safety, and no inertia firing pin. The FP issuse could be remedied by shortening the FP, it would then act just like a 1911 type. The thumb safety could be engaged when the pistol was at half-cock and would not only prevent the hammer from falling but also prevent it from being cocked any further.

The grip angle was also slightly different and it had a Commander type ring hammer.

Even though it was a Llama, they were fitted and finished very well. My Father had one that he purchased brand new in 1949 and he carried it until 1974. The blue was totally gome from the slide sides but it would feed any 9mm parabellum ammo you could find. It was wicked accurate with the old Super-Vel ammo.
