Hello!

I am new to this forum and would very much appreciate some advice. Over the past few years, I have been inactive in shooting autoloaders, until recently, when I have been borrowing a friend's. I am not a stranger to shooting pistols, but consider myself as similar to a rookie for now because of my inactivity. I wish to have a gun to shoot at targets and also to carry with me in the wilderness as a backup when hunting deer and elk. I handload rifle cartridges and plan to handload for the new pistol as well.

As it now stands, I am considering:

1. STI Trojan 5.0 in 45acp (can get one for about $920 from Brazos)
2. Kimber Stainless Target II in 10mm ($809 at SportingArms.com)
3. Kimber Eclipse Target II in 45acp (about $950 to $1000)

I should like to have a reasonable quality 1911 that I could start with and perhaps consider to use, if I decide to enter IPSC shooting competition. If I decide I would like to enter IPSCs routinely, I could buy a custom gun.

I might say that I am absolutely fascinated by the 10mm. When I was first compiling my list of candidates, I was only considering 45acp, but after I found out about the Kimber 10mm, I decided to seriously consider it.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks much for your time and consideration,

I'd look at the Dan Wesson Razorback 10mm. The only problem is they are in short supply, so you might not be able to get one right away. I'd take it over the kimber, but I think the Kimber will be nice too.

You are making some good choices. The Kimbers that I have seen are excellent. In the 10mm however, I think I'd look at the Glock in whatever size that you want. I think that the G29 would be an excellent CCW if you can handle it properly.

Thanks for taking the time! Do you think I am getting off-base by considering the 10mm versus 45acp?

10mm options

If I go the 10mm route, then it seems that I should also consider the following makers, above and beyond the Kimber:

1. Glock, such as a 20 or 29
2. Dan Wesson Razorback, or Pointman
3. Witness
4. Older SWs
5. Delta's
6. STIs (for at least $1600, for an Edge as an example, though...)

Any further thoughts on this?

I realize that I may be getting into another track on this, so I apologize; but I do appreciate the thoughts given so far and any others that anyone may have.

Any one of those sound good. Just one thought thou, if the STI runs your budget to the max, then get one of the others. Quality holster, extra mags, and at least a few hundred rounds should automatically be added to the base cost of the pistol. That's just my way of thinking thou.

Take the Delta.

Say $700 to $750 for a really good used one figures about right. Then say $50 to $70 for a really good holster. Also say, 6 metalform mags, at $33 each, unless you get in on a group buy then about $14 each. Last but not least ammo, say 1K from ammoman.com for $269 shipped.

total on the high side $1287 and $1103 on the low

Just thinking out loud, but you can see my point. Think about the whole package instead of just the pistol.

Duckfoot:

I really like and appreciate your post. I agree with your point about the total cost of ownership. To be honest, I had only been thinking about the gun price and had figured I would get around to the other goodies later. But, kind of like buying a horse --- the horse price is really one of the smallest costs when compared to barn, feed, medicine, etc.

Again, thanks for taking the time to inform me!

First I think you should decide on what type of action you prefer. In your looking at one particular cartridge you have single actions, double/single actions, and a safe action.
After you narrow your action choice down then you can choose a model.

Based on your posts it seems you've pretty much decided on getting a 1911, which is a superb choice, so I guess the next decision is caliber. In my opinion, 45acp is the more practical, less expensive option (except maybe for reloaders), but 10mm is fun to shoot. I don't reload (yet), so the cost of 10mm ammo really gets me down.

If you decide you want to go 10mm vice 45acp then duckfoot said it very well. I was looking at getting an STI 10mm, but was offended by the cost. Instead I got a Delta for $700 (used obviously, but pretty good condition), then spent another couple hundred fixing it up, getting accessories, ammo, etc.

If you decide you really want an STI 10mm, you can get a Trojan in .40S&W, then have a 'smith ream the barrel to 10mm. That'd save you a fairly sizeable chunk of change over buying an Edge.

In 45acp there are plenty of nice choices out there, and you probably can't go wrong with any of them.

Good Luck!
