What's the worst shooting you're ever seen at the range?

When I took my concealed weapons class They had us shooting at large silhouette targets. at 7 yards. we shot 50 rounds if I remember right. The lady to my right did not hit her target once.

This guy who kept bragging he was a swat member, He was all over with his pistol covering the entire target, Then he brought out his sniper rifle, All he could say was swat never misses as he blasted away with the rifle several shots were a far cry from perfect he just looked at my target with a 5 shot group measuring .354 his was about 3 inches not very impressive to me. But his mouth worked darn good

Most of the ranges I go to in the greater Houston (Texas) area have some sort of 1 second rule. Some of them didn't until they got bullet holes in their roofs and awnings.

Although my range doesnt have a silly rule like that.

Everytime I go to Shiloh in N. Houston I really have to wonder just how some of the bullet holes got in some places. Real head scratcher...

I saw a group of macho-looking guys trying to shoot trap with an 18.5 inch barrel. They just kept on missing and missing. They were even loading three or four rounds per single target until the range employee told them to only load one round per target. My friend and I were a couple of slingers down using shotguns with barrels that were the proper length for shooting trap. The guys using the short barrel kept looking over at us, maybe because we were hitting our targets. On a side note, it was her first time shooting and she started breaking clays after just a few tries.

Anyway, that range no longer allows short barrels on the trap range, which is unfortunate because those guys were pretty amusing.

Who says you can't shoot trap with an 18.5" barrel? I've done it. Why have a rule against it?

rush limbaugh

My accuracy was off today. A guy ask if it was okay to listen to rush limbaugh on his portable radio while we were shooting. I said sure, thinking I didn't want this crazy guy getting mad at me. With plugs and muffs, I could still hear Rush over the gun fire.

After reading all the posts about holes in the ceiling, Monday when I went to my regular range I looked up, there is a wood "ceiling" that extends over the first 5 yards in front of the bench... yep, full of holes. Is that something that only happens with certain types of guns or do people really shoot the ceiling with a normal handgun while trying to hit a target downrange?

I don't think those are all from people trying to hit a target downrange, necessarily, I'll bet some are from people not following rule #3.

Probably others are from novice, inexperienced, over-zeaous, etc, shooters that try to shoot far "too much gun" for them, first shot recoils the handgun way up, they pull the trigger again during the process (not consciously or intentionally) and it fires again, hitting the ceiling (the same way at least one woman has died when giving a far too powerful handgun by some incredibly stupid guy who thought it would be funny)

I will actually admit to an incident where I did have an unintended discharge.

I had just got my Wilson/Beretta 92 Brig Tac that had a trigger job done on it by Wilson. It's the nicest DA trigger I have on a gun, seconded very closely by 686 PC gun. I was hitting my target very accurately and consistently (shooting at pie plate sized target, and 20 yards out in the woods). So I decided to turn up the speed a little bit and see how quickly I could hit my target. Well, that nicely tuned trigger surprised me. :uhoh:

I popped one through the already existing hole, and as the gun was coming back on target, I squeezed a bit too soon, again going for speed, and I sent one sailing about a foot above the target, and watched it hit dirt about 30 feet beyond the target.

It was a good reminder of how important trigger control is, especially when shooting a gun you are unfamiliar with, and sacrificing trigger control in favor of speed is a bad idea, and counter productive.

I've never hit the ceiling or wall at a range though. But I've also never been to a range where the walls, ceiling, and target holding trolley, or whatever you call it, wasn't covered in holes, or obvious glancing shots.

I had a young man in the stall next to me shooting his Glock "gangsta" style - one handed and sideways. At 5-yards he could barely hit his man-sized silhouette target. When I brought my target back it, there were even some extra holes at the edges from him!

The worst I have ever seen was a lady so afraid of firing a gun that when she did fire it she closed her eyes and pulled down while pulling the trigger. The round went into the ground five or six feet in front of her.

I was shooting a 900 match at an indoor range last year next to a first timer. When he said first timer, I figured he meant first time shooting a bullseye match. Nope, it was his first time shooting period. He was using a buddy's guns and decided that a 25 yard bullseye match was the place to start.

He scored 0 on his first target, the slow fire. When we put up timed fire targets his first shot hit MY target hanger, sending it swinging so badly I couldn't shoot. I was granted a penalty free refire and opted to finish in the next flight of shooters.

I rented a S&W 500 once, for fun. They asked us to only load one round at a time because people had put an accidental second round into the ceiling before.
Side note: I shot that gun surprisingly well, until my hands were shaking after 10 rounds or so. Try one sometime if you have never done it.

I'm sure I will eventually...free rentals for members at the well-stocked range I joined and they have one in the rental case.
