Georgia Politicians Introduce ‘Assault Weapon’ Confiscation Bill

While we hear that in Washington State they are considering an 'assault' weapons ban. The same thing is being proposed in Georgia with 'seizure' of weapons.

It would ban possession, sale and transport of certain black rifles and also include a ban on large capacity magazines as well as certain kind of ammo. Remember guys, this is an election year. Throw them out of office for proposing this.

Good Luck Georgia!

"On January 11, Democrats in Georgia’s state house introduced a bill that bans “assault weapons” and opens the door for the “seizure” of such weapons, along with accessories like “high capacity” magazines.

The bill–HB 731–is sponsored by Mary Margaret Oliver (D-83rd), Stacey Abrams (D-89th), Carolyn Hugley (D-136th), Pat Gardiner (D-57th), Dar’shun Kendrick (D-93rd), Dee Dawkins-Haigler (D-91st)."

Hmmm. Proposed gun confiscation legislation in gun loving GA? Look at the sponsors - not exactly the mainstream in a Republican state. I expect the bill will die a quiet death in committee and never never make it out to a floor discussion or vote. As a Georgian I'll watch it, but it looks like more grandstanding than serious legislation.

Every one of the sponsors is in a safe Democratic district that didn't even have a Republican on the ballot in 2014.

In 2014 1/3rd of all state legislative seats were uncontested in the general election and 61% in the Primary. Gerrymandering sucks!

Gotta give them credit for coming out and saying it.

"instrumentalities" My vocabulary is probably a little below par; is this even a word?

As a lifetime resident of Georgia,
This makes me sick! What is with the country pushing to ban guns!? What purpose do they believe it will serve? What good will it due to take guns from law abiding citizens!?

Yet, I bet they have no problem with the 9mm strapped to the security officer protecting their tails at their office. Give me a break :fire::banghead:

Pro forma Democrat Party introduction pandering to the uneducated masses, it will never go anywhere in this Legislative session.

^ Agree 100%. When they're up next time they'll tell about how they tried to save the children or whatever. Gun laws in GA have been headed the right direction for several years and I believe that will continue for some time. Unfortunately, if the population demographics continues down the path it's on now, that will eventually change.

I agree with those who say this bill is election year theatrics.

While we hear that in Washington State they are considering an 'assault' weapons ban. The same thing is being proposed in Georgia with 'seizure' of weapons.

I reckon some knucklehead will introduce something similar here in Colorado. Just to make the representatives choose sides.

It has become a race to the bottom.

I see Moms Demand Action and Bloomberg in the background on this.......

Fueled by these guys.

I have no idea about how things are run in Georgia, but I believe if the government confiscates what was formally legal property they have to pay for it.

Does the bill in question offer any insights as to where the money is supposed to come from?

Nope.

If private property is taken for public use, the owner must receive fair compensation.

If property becomes contraband because a law is passed making it illegal to possess it, no compensation need be paid.

Just an update: this proposed legislation did die quickly. I checked with both my state congressman & senator early in the session and was assured it would go nowhere.

Thankful to be living in a gun friendly state!!

Glad it looks like a non-starter.

While I'm glad it didn't go anywhere. This points out what can happen to any "gun friendly" state. I'm betting most of the Democrats that sponsored the bill are from the Atlanta area. If not, Georgia has an even bigger problem than their cities.

(I cut out out the more political stuff)

You're right.

What happens is that the news will keep publicizing shootings with assault weapons (they don't have to be accurate).

The politicians will keep floating these types of bills as the solution.

Eventually, people start believing it... and then vote for it.
