I only had enough money to buy a Stainless 4 5/8" .357 Vaquero but I truely admire the customized ones and would really like to see some pictures of customs! Would any owners please show theirs off?
I carry mine either in a old style 1880's style Texas sholder holster or a cross draw Wyoming holster.
I like the cross draw for speed but the Sholder rig carry some the heavy revolver more comfortably.
I mainly shoot .38Spl but really like the way +P's shoot (most accurate too)!
The heavy weight Vaquero easily handles heavy 158 gr factory loads without much recoil!
I added a set of faux Stag grips and heir fatter diameter and well placed Stag grooves fit my hand perfectly! The grooves fall right where your fingers need purchase.
Please show me some custom Vaquero's???
Thanks,
ZVP

I don't know if this qualifies as "customizing" but a number of applications (and a lot of old fashioned elbow grease), of Mother's Mag Polish went into putting a mirror like finish on this stainless steel Vaquero. A pair of Bar-S Tru Ivory grips were a great fit and a perfect finishing touch on this revolver.

Top gun is a Clements .45Colt Bisley Vaquero with barrel cut to 4 5/8", pre-war S&W style rear sight, custom front, all manner of tuning and ivory micarta by BluMagnum. Fairly certain it will end up going to Huntington to become a .475.

Great pix and some fine, fine Vaqueros!
Interesting calibers.
I really wanted a .45 but was .38 committed and on a budget
Thanks guys!

This isn't a custom, but I think it's interesting. This is a new dealer exclusive (Talo) from Ruger in .44 Mag -- yup, the full-sized frame was used.

Seems like it would be uncomfortable to shoot with warm 44's. Though I've only ever shot a 6" Blackhawk in 357, so what do I know?

I will try and shoot it by the end of this week and see how it feels with heavies. I have never been a fan of the birdshead grip frame, and I assume it will be unpleasant, but we shall see....

Ive got one in 44 Mag. Its not that bad to shoot with full loads. Ive heard people say the checkering makes it worse although thats really not where you feel it. I do find myself flinching a bit and I have to concentrate to keep it on target. OK, I'll be honest. It is much more comfortable with lighter loads. I sent my grip frame out to have custom grips made for it as the factory grips fit it so poorly.

This is what it would look like with a standard grip frame. I put one on mine while the original frame is out having Giraffe bone grips made. BTW if you use a Bisley grip you'll need to change the hammer too. The Montado hammer on there now is too short to fill the gap across the back with the Bisley grip frame.

I have to say I think it looks a lot better with the standard grip frame. For some reason, with the birdshead grip frame, it doesn't look proportionate in terms of overall size to the rest of the gun.

I am not sure what you are looking for in a custom Vaquero. Here is a picture of one of my working custom one.

It is about 20 years old. It features a action job, blackpowder bevel on front of cylinder, birdshead style ejector rod and steel housing, Ruger Super Blackhawk hammer and Stag grips.

It wears it's worn bluing proudly having been drawn thousands of times and fired thousands of rounds of ammunition.

This gun has been used in CAS and CMAS along with doing duty in a holster hanging on my bedpost as a home defense gun. Those big 45 Colt holes are very reassuring.

love that one with the smith K frame rear sight. Allways wanted to have a 4 inch vaquero done like that in 475. I actually had a bearcat in 32 mag built by alan harton with a smith rear sight. My buddys daughter loved it and I ended up giving it to her.

Thanks Lloyd but it's not actually a S&W sight. It's Clements' proprietary sight he makes for fixed sight Rugers in the style of the pre-war S&W's. It's a bit more svelte than a contemporary S&W sight and requires less material removed from the topstrap.
