Radagast

Thank you very much for that.

Ik it is in fact 1987 - that'd be cool as it was a particularly fine year for me. I like the notion that this was floating around back then wowing folks.

Todd.

Recently picked up a 66-2 (S/N AUY93xx) with 6" barrel. It has the target hammer and trigger (if that means anything?) Anyone know the DOB? Thanks in advance! Here is a pic...

ALCxxxx shipped November 1985.
AVBxxxx shipped June 1987. The change over to the 66-3 began in 1986, S&W would have continued the -2 until parts on hand were used up.
My guesstimate is late 1986 or early 1987 for your gun.

Thanks Radagast!

Interesting on how late the 66-2 was manufactured. My guess would have been late 70's early 80's. Thanks again!!

Cattail:
I'll need the serial number to date it.
The Model 64-2 .38 Military & Police stainless 2 inch tapered barrel was manufactured from 1977 to 1988.

Looking at revolver marked .45 w/o model no. Serial # on bottom of butt is 1790xx. What kind of .45 will it shoot and what is a good value?

Thanks

That should be a .45 Hand Ejector Model 1917. Caliber is .45 ACP using moon clips, or .45 Auto Rim.
These were made for the US Army up to serial number 169959 in 1919. Guns were sold commercially in the inter war years, but sales were slow. Serial number 180455 shipped in 1929.
Yours falls outside the main serial range for guns made for Brazil and shipped in 1938, but may have been a Brazilian contract gun anyway as serial numbers as early as 169xxx shipped with that contract.

It should be marked S&W D.A. .45 on the left side of the barrel and made in the U.S.A. on the right side of the frame. 1909 patent dates on the top strap.

There will be a Brazilian crest and the date 1937 on the side plate if a Brazilian gun.

If there is 4 line address instead of Made in U.S.A on the right side of the frame, then it is a post WWII gun put together by S&W using surplus parts.

A commercial sale gun will have higher collector value than an Brazilian gun as there were 25,000 made for Brazil, with the majority re-imported as surplus in 1990.

Value of a 4 line address gun will be hard to tell. There were 10,000 made.

I highly recommend you take some pics and post them in a new thread for appraisal. Collector value is highly dependent on condition. A fair condition gun may go for $400, a mint condition gun up to $3000.

Just to add, it predates the hammer block safety, relying on the rebound slide to keep the firing pin off the primer. Treat it as a 5 shooter if kept loaded, leaving the hammer down on an empty chamber.

That number does not match any S&W serial range. It's probably an assembly number, use to track parts in the factory.
The serial number will be found on the bottom of the grip frame. You may need to take the grips off to see it.

Radagast..

This is a six shot revolver. He is away from the gun right now,but he is sure that there is no V. He will check for sure when he gets Home.

Thanks a bunch.......

Goste:
.38 Military & Police Model of 1905 3rd Change manufactured between 1909 & 1915 in the serial range 146900 to 241703. It predates heat treatment of cylinders, so no plusp or jacketed ammo. It predates the positive hammer block safety introduced after a fatality with a dropped gun, so treat it as a 5 shooter, leaving the hammer down on an empty chamber.
