So I've wanted to reload for years and got the old classic Lee Loader for my bday in 243win. I used imr3031 since my dad had some left. I read it's supposed to be too fast for this caliber but wow the stuff is accurate. I can see how it gets addictive. I want to try loading heavier bullets for deer in 90-100g and was wondering if you think I could use the same powder? H414 is what the local store has in stock which I read may be better for heavy loads? Here is my first reload results, five shots with my Tikka T3 at 100yds with 70g Speer HP and 36.5g of imr3031. pnNnfFTBj.jpg

Welcome aboard Sir. A great hobby you've entered into. :)
Haven't used 3031 for .243, but have used H414 for 70 & 75 grain varmint bullets to 100 grain bullets. It works well.

I am quite impressed how well the Lee Loader worked, all the hammering can get tiring but I don't load a whole lot. Someone just gave me their RCBS Rock chucker press which they never used so I may start using that in the future. The list of things is adding up I need though lol, a tumbler, case trimmer and full size dies if I use the press. The little Lee kit is just so convenient because I can load anywhere in the house when I'm bored and have some time.

I'm using Hornady 95g SST's and IMR4064 in my Ruger American and getting a ragged hole at 100yds and still keeping in a 1" at 200.

I haven't put it on paper at 300 and 400 yet but I can ring the 8" gong at both distances.

The .243 is a great rifle to load for and fun to play around on the range.

Welcome to the addiction! I started a year ago thinking about getting in. I bought my first press in December 2015. Now I have a room full of equipment and supplies. And a depleted bank account!

Welcome, Renton83.

The old original Lee Loader was great if you were going to just knock out a few rounds for a weekend in the deer woods, but as you know, gets a little tedious. I gave up on my Lee Loader after about the 100th .30 Carbine round that I loaded and started saving up for a press. Since someone bestowed the magnificent gift of an RCBS Rock Chucker on you, you're well on your way to a complete set-up.

Supplies are somewhat limited and expensive here in Vancouver, Canada sadly. I see the same equipment for half the price at Cabellas in the US. Shipping across the border is very expensive though, may need to make a road trip down to one.

So I was unable to get more IMR 3031 which groups amazing for me. I got H414 which I've read works well in 243 winchester. I'm also using winchester large primers since it's ball powder. I can't get the dang shots to group though! I found between 36-37g of 3031 was perfect and the loading chart says the velocity should be around 3200fps. The H414 loads I've been trying have been between 44-46g so far and don't group well at all. The load guide says that h414 gives higher velocities so these loads i've been using are between 34-3600. Do you think I need to load quite a bit less to try and get the same velocity my old powder was giving? I can't see what else would be causing the poor accuracy unless my rifle just does best at the slower velocity? oh here is my target using two loads of the new powder, ignore the random two bullet holes that was the wife. this is 100yards, on left is 44g and right is 46. http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o293/Renton83/guns/IMG_5959_1.jpg

I can just imagine your conversation with Canadian customs...

Anything to declare?

Igniters, combustibles, and expendables?

- or -

Gunpowder, primers, and bullets?

Not sure which they'd rather hear. Might want to call them first and find out what statutes allow you to import said items.

Unless you are only considering reloading equipment. But even then I think I'd want to make a call just to be sure. They were pretty helpful the 3 years I resided in Kitchener.

BTW, nice shooting.

Yeah I wouldn't want the hassle, I'll pay the extra to buy the stuff up here. Gunpowder always seems to be in short supply but I hear that's a problem everywhere.

Oh Renton, you should have talked to us before you took the first hit on the reloading crack pipe.

It won't be long before you find yourself digging in the garbage at the range for brass and collecting calibers you don't even have a rife, for that day when you might, because now you can reload.

My wife finds it funny, she finds reloading stuff everywhere because I don't have a proper space for it. Last week she went to bake and found my brass drying in the oven from being cleaned lol.
